It is a pity Laurence feels as she does as they appeared to be enjoying their first five days in the sun around the pool. All dogs react when threatened as our friendly family Beagle was and he snarled but did not touch - this was infront of us both. They were both kept apart after that.
The unusually heavy storm caused a torrential downpour, unusual for this area, and a terracotta tile must have given way and let in some water in the parent's bedroom to form a puddle. When they alerted me to the issue at lunchtime the floor was dry despite it raining steadily all morning. The roofer was already elsewhere so could not come til the weekend when the problem was identified and fixed. I offered them our other gite which he seemed keen to accept but, as the weather had now turned, she was keen to leave and demanded compensation. I thought this unreasonable as I had offered a replacement gite (200euro a week more than they had paid which they were aware of as they had clearly looked at our website) and the bad weather was out of my control - I'm sure other hosts, and I'm sure other renters, will agree that the weather is not something anyone can control and that we are seeing increasingly extreme weather everywhere not just in France. In this area of southwest France, we have fragile terracotta roof tiles - and this problem was fixed by the roofer when he came the weekend. I think it is normal to expect all adult renters, and hosts, to behave reasonably in such circumstance and, in my opinion, after welcoming renters for over 10 years, you over-reacted.
All homes will smell when there is heavy rain and wet clothing and shoes. At no time did I see windows and doors open to air the gite - it was always firmly shut up - never a good thing. I'm sure that in my 10 years of renting out this gite, many people would have said something, particularly in the spring and autumn when it often rains.
This is a stone farm with thick walls and, as such, the signal struggles to pass through the walls as with all such houses - there is free wifi access by all the doors, ie in the stone bedroom and at the bar, as well as outside on the terrace - this of course depends on your device. It will not work on the sofa as I explained when you arrived.
I wish you, and your family well, and hope you enjoy future holidays within the airbnb family.
