ABOUT THE AREA
Puerta del Sol ( XVIII century) is now Madrid's most popular central square among locals, where main events take place year round (as celebrating New Years Eve).
The heart of the "old city" or what is referred to as Austrian Madrid. Adjacent to the square is the Preciados Shopping District.
Many restaurants, cafés and bars nearby and just a short distance away is the Plaza de Santa Ana, where there are many relaxing terraces for outdoor dining.
Gran Via, just 2 minutes up the street, embodies a century of Madrid's history. You will find large cinemas halls, elegant hotels, and lots of grand architecture along this vibrant avenue. Just off Gran Via, Fuencarral street is the trendiest Shopping District.
As the geographic centre of the city, the Puerta del Sol has excellent metro and bus communications, and the Atocha train station is a 20 minute walk or just three metro stops away.
