Moraira, Comunidad Valenciana, Espanha

Moraira, jewel of the Costa Blanca

Moraira is a former fishing village on the Costa Blanca, situated between the popular towns of Javea and Calpe. Moraira has clearly retained its unique character and forms a single municipality together with Teulada, which is located inland. There are no tall hotels or other high-rise buildings here. Moraira has a fantastic climate with an average of 320 sunny days a year, making it a desirable location all year round, with the pretty marina and many shops and restaurants. Thus, it is an ideal place for overwintering. Particularly striking in Moraira is the high quality finish of the street furniture and how clean everything is. There is no graffiti, no litter on the street...not even a cigarette butt to be found.

Many activities, welcoming terraces, pubs, and over 70 restaurants.

You can still find remnants of ancient Spain in Moraira: visit the old "Torre de Vigia” lookout tower" (1553), or the historical "El Castillo" castle (1742), which previously served as a refuge from pirates and now serves as a fitting backdrop for many local festivals. Then there is the large and modern marina. Sheltered between the rocks of Cap Blanc and Punta de Moraira, and still the homeport of the fishing boats. In keeping with tradition, you can buy your own fresh fish in the mornings from "Lonja" fish market close by!

The weather
The most important question when you go on holiday is...What is the climate? Or, as your departure date approaches...What is the weather forecast? In that respect, we can put your mind at ease. Moraira has one of the best climates in Europe! The mild Costa Blanca climate means the weather in Moraira is unsurpassed all year round at just 2 hours’ flight from London. Depart in the cold and rain in the morning, enjoy a Sangria on a terrace by afternoon. Besides, the World Health Organization has designated the climate in Moraira one of the healthiest in the world. Moraira is blessed with over 300 sunny days a year.

Beaches and swimming
The coastline (over 8 km long) consists of alternating rocky outcrops and beautiful, child-friendly sandy beaches without sharp drops. Moraira beach has been awarded a Blue Flag, an official distinction for clean and clear water. The largest beach, L´Ampolla, close to the centre, is popular for swimming. It is situated at the foot of the old 'castillo'. A tour of El Castillo is also worthwhile. There is a playground, lifeguards, a take-away restaurant and large car park. The sandy beach of El Portet, with its unobtrusive boulevard and a few restaurants and terraces, is highly recommended. It is the most sheltered beach in the area, so you can dive into the roaring sea and enjoy the sun here all year round, even in winter - perhaps while enjoying a tasty Sangria on a terrace. Other beaches include the little Platgetas beach and rocky L´Andragó beach. There are many sandy beaches close by and a few (mixed) nudist beaches. Moreover, topless sunbathing is permitted on all beaches.

What is there to do?
You certainly won’t be bored in Moraira. There is plenty for young and old to do. As if sunbathing, lounging on a terrace, visiting the beach, shopping, swimming, playing sport (golf, tennis, paddling, cycling, midget golf, go-karting, horse riding) water sports (diving, snorkelling, fishing, sailing) and going out were not enough... how about: climbing up to "Torre de Vigia", a tour of "El Castillo", a vineyard tour with wine tasting, a day trip to Ibiza, a visit to the fish market, the fair, or a theme park? And naturally, not forgetting the many festivals and holidays in Moraira.

Sports and leisure activities
The coastal town has a modern marina with watersports facilities for sailing, diving, snorkelling and fishing. For an active holiday of sports and plenty of activities, this is the place to be. A few options include: hiring a boat and/or jet-ski, go-karting, quad biking, horse riding, pedal boating, canoeing, kayak tours, volleyball, golf, midget golf, parasailing and tennis. Kite surfing is available in Calpe, just 15 minutes’ drive from Moraira. Of course, walking is another option.

Nightlife and eating & drinking
There is a children’s fair every evening in the large car park. Young people and adults enjoy the popular "Saxo" discotheque with its lounge-terrace and the newly opened "Blanca" disco-lounge. In addition, there are numerous pubs in the village, such as "Cucaracha", the "Mystique" dance and lounge bar, and the "Tower" English pub. Thus, plenty of options for eating and drinking in Moraira. With many convivial pubs, terraces and over 70 restaurants, there certainly is something for everyone.

You will find everything you need for groceries and shopping in Moraira. There are four large supermarkets, including the highly rated "Pepe la Sal", competitive "Mas-y-Mas", and the somewhat smaller "Open Cor". The latter is located beneath block 1 of the Calamora complex opposite the petrol station and is open 7 days a week. The smaller "Pepe la Sal" in the centre is also open on Sundays. Thus, you always have somewhere to do your basic shopping. The other large supermarkets are open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 to 20:00 hours and closed on Sunday.

Additionally, you can find smaller speciality stores in the centre, within walking distance. These are usually closed during the siesta from approximately 13:00 to 17:00 hours. In the centre, you can find a vegetable shop, a baker, various luxury clothing stores, shoe shops, gift shops ("Ale-Hop" is highly recommended), a pharmacy, hair salon, as well as a number of stores selling household articles, toyshops, numerous "Chinese shops", a Chinese version of "Action" (open all day), many little restaurants, (many) estate agents and banks. (banks: open Mon. through Fri. from 9:00 to 14:00 hours). There are cash points on every street corner. There are also other shopping facilities in the area offering extensive options for shopping...

On Fridays, there is a relatively large market in the car park at the fair from 9:00 to 14:00 hours.
Here you can buy clothing, shoes, bags, souvenirs, toys, fabrics, cushions, ceramics, fish, fruit and vegetables.
On Wednesdays, there is a small but lively market in Teulada, of which Moraira forms part of the same municipality.

The healthy climate, over 300 sunny days a year, the moderate temperatures, enchanting countryside and good medical facilities make this the perfect place for overwintering. Medical care in Moraira, like the rest of the Costa Blanca, is geared towards tourists and seniors. It is even possible to arrange domiciliary care, because many English, primarily seniors, overwinter in the area.

Medical facilities
There are English speaking general practitioners and physiotherapists in the village and an emergency care facility at the large car park. It is also possible to arrange domiciliary care, which is very convenient for those who wish to overwinter here.

Welkom! Robert, Joyce en Kick
