Outras coisas a ter em conta
Puerto Pollensa – Things to do!

Pool and Spa.
Just over the road is Mar Senses, which has a pool, Spa and Gym. Entrance to Mar Senses is c€8.00 permitting a day of relaxation. There is a restaurant and a bar.

Markets. On Sundays, visit the bustling Pollensa market to stock up on a wide variety fruit, vegetables, meats, flowers, wine, leather and arts and crafts products etc. Go early (9.00 a.m.) by bus from the harbour area by taxi car. Enjoy a coffee and an English newspaper at one of the market cafes or watch the world go by. Alternatively visit the smaller Puerto Pollensa market on a Wednesday mornings. This is held in the Placa (Square).

The Pine Walk. Stroll along the “Pine Walk” to the Hotel Ila D’Or to enjoy a sundowner overlooking the bay. To get there, walk to beach, turn left and keep the sea on your right for about 20 minutes. There are some fabulous properties en route. It’s a good de-stressor, so best done early after arrival! There is a restaurant there too and we can vouch for the food but expect ‘city prices’ for the food and drinks.

Mountain View. In a car (or on a bicycle - but not for the feint hearted!) visit the viewing point on the mountain road between Puerto Pollensa and Formentor. Park the car/bicycle and venture up the steps. This is particularly good at sunrise/sunset. One option for magnificent views is to continue up the mountain (few people do this) on a road/track opposite the steps to the viewing point. Proceed along the track and through a gap in the rock. The track does not go to Formentor, but there are some magnificent views across the bay to Alcudia. Explore the round tower before you return by the same route. Thereafter, drive to Formentor to visit the beach, the Formentor Hotel or Cabo (Lighthouse) de Formentor.

Formentor. Catch the ferry from the Port de Pollensa to Formentor. This regularly leaves from the Restaurant “Stay” area at the harbour, exits the bay of Pollensa past the lighthouse and docks at Formentor. Another possibility is to take a boat trip further out, past pretty, solitary coves (Cala (Cove) Figuera, Cala Murta) with clear water, white sands, where you can dive, fish and eat on board. Morning, afternoon or full days trips are possible.

A hidden Valley. Walk to Cala Boquer in the Boquer valley, about a one-hour stroll, best undertaken early morning or later afternoon to avoid the potentially fierce heat. This Valley runs between the Tramantana Mountains and is a good example of the Mallorcan hinterland. To get there, identify the Farmhouse set into the side of the mountain, slightly right in the middle distance when viewed from the apartment balcony. At the farmhouse walk through it’s courtyard (a right of way and ignoring the barking dogs!) exiting through an iron gate/style. Proceed right on the track past the large boulders, the open ground and the goats until you reach the pebbled beach. There’s very little there, except some wood shanties built into the rocks, some fishing boats and a pebbled beach, but you will probably have earned a cooling dip and a drink!?

Water parks. For families, drive to the Alcudia “Hidro Park” or to El Arenal “Aquacity”, two water parks, the latter of which is the largest (in Europe). Aquacity has rapids, a Kamikaze, surf beaches, a black hole, Congo River, Tsunami, Jacuzzi…and sun loungers for us adults! There’s a picnic area to enjoy your market purchases! Aquacity probably gets busy so it might best to go on a Saturday morning, which is changeover day when there could be fewer people there.

Caves. Visit the Cuevas Del Drach (Dragon Caves) at Porto Cristo a huge cave complex with subterranean lakes that are the largest in the world. The rock formations are lit with different colours and the finale is a musical recital played by musicians from boats on the lake. We’ve not been for some years, so the risk is it might be a bit commercial now.

Mountain drive and Chopin. Drive South West into the mountains (The Serra de Tramantana) towards Lluc Monastery, Valldemossa (Chopin was once a resident), Soller and Deia. Good views, mountainside restaurants and a rock swimming pool. Beware the coaches on the bends!

Dining. For dining in cafes and restaurants there are plenty to choose. The Corb Mari next door to the apartment is good. The meat and fish are excellent and a seat on the terrace is best. The restaurant ‘Stay’ on the harbour is also good. Enjoy snacks along the Pine Walk or in the Placa. It’s worth stocking your own alcoholic drinks but beware the shops prices can vary.

There is much, much more on offer. A visit to the tourist information at the roundabout by the marina or a dip into a guidebook should provide plenty of ideas. There are also some guide books in the apartment. Alternatively, it is possible to just relax on the beach and swim in the sea!
