Step back in time to stay at historic Tanilba House (1831).
It is a unique, convict built, heritage listed stone house on 3 acres of gardens overlooking stunning Port Stephens. The rooms have most of the original features so it is an authentic, romantic, old world experience.
Sitting on a peninsula almost surrounded by water, the house is one of the oldest in NSW - with an intriguing history.
Parks & bay beaches are an easy walk away. Bird life is abundant so be sure to bring your camera!

O espaço
The space being offered is the original maids quarters which incorporates two large bedrooms (one upstairs and one down) joined by a staircase. The area has its own separate lockable outside entrance and is very private from us. We dont lease out the house generally so there would be no other guests staying (besides us of course). The rooms are furnished with antiques for an authentic and homely old world experience.
The two bedrooms are ideal for a couple (or two) or a family.
There is a large separate private bathroom close to the rooms.
We also provide basic hotel room supplies in one of the rooms - ie table and chairs, tea and coffee making facilities, a toaster, a microwave plus a small fridge.
There is an outdoor setting on the verandah outside the rooms which overlooks the lovely garden and fish pond.
The most amazing part of the house its history and all the original features. The stone walls are over 50cm thick in parts of the house and the timber is the original hardwood. The grounds include the original convict gaol, a 50m heritage listed wisteria and bougainvillea covered pergola, a stone circular driveway and a wishing chair. The grounds grew the first Hunter district vineyard and echoes of the wine bottling business are still there - including the cellar.
The locally renowned heritage listed "Temple of the Stork" is adjacent to the house.
There is plenty of off street parking and boat plus caravan parking can be accommodated if required.
We warmly welcome people of all nationalities, religion and sexual orientation.

Acesso dos hóspedes
The private lockable bathroom is close to the bedrooms.
A washing machine can also be made available.
The main part of the house is currently being restored and is accessible for viewing when we are available to take you through.

Outras coisas a ter em conta
The bathroom is only a few metres away through a covered breezeway.

Tanilba House is on a peninsula surrounded by beautiful Port
Stephens. The house is in a quiet area surrounded by various parks and an abundance of bird life. We have even had koalas in the gumtrees in our garden at various times. Meridian Park is directly in front of the house and provides stunning views of the water from the house and garden across to Tahlee. There is also a small beach in the park.
Sunrise Park at the Eastern end of the peninsula provides an amazing vista of the rising sun and Sunset Park never disappoints with stunning sunset colours on a clear evening.
There is easy access to the water for kayaking and boating. There are extensive marina facilities in nearby Lemon Tree Passage (5 mins away) which is renowned for excellent boating and fishing. Dolphins are common visitors in the bay.
Bay beaches perfect for swimming, windsurfing and sailing are an easy walk away. There are lovely coastal and bushwalks in the neighborhood including the Tilligerry koala boardwalk.
Shops, an excellent RSL with courtesy bus and Coles supermarket plus a variety of shops are less than 2 km's away. Lemon Tree Passage (5 mins drive away) has another club with live music, bingo etc and various restaurants.
Major shops, dolphin and whale watching tours, an aquarium, a large marina, sand dune quad biking, pristine surf beaches and quality restaurants are within 30 minutes drive away in Nelson Bay/ Salamander Bay.
