We are a family of 4 with 2 teenage boys and this place suited us perfectly. The outdoor space is particularly useful as there is a lovely big table to dine on and a wonderful sunshade, if needed. There are also comfortable chairs to lounge about on and enough space for the boys to kick a football. The attention to detail in the house makes your stay easier and relaxing. There are fly nets on windows and doors allowing you to get fresh air in but no insects. There are blinds attached to the large windows at the side of the house meaning you get privacy when required and the house remains cool when it is very sunny. The interior furnishings are all of a good standard and the kitchen is well equipped with lovely crockery and everything you need to get your holiday started. The coffee machine was an added luxury and typical of the amount of thought that has gone into this property. Finding the place and parking was easy. Nina was away for our visit but called us to check that we had arrived safely. She was also at the end of the phone for any questions we had. The village of Hattem is historic and beautiful. It is a 15 minute walk to the town centre where there are restaurants and small shops. We used the ice-cream parlour on several occasions and one of my sons enjoyed using the water pump in the centre square to get drinking water after our ice-creams. There is a wonderful Italian restaurant in the village and a lovely little bakery/cafe which was great value for money. Hattem is also right on the water front where you can watch the activity in the harbour or hire a kayak or boat to have some fun. Of course, being Holland, there are bikes everywhere and there are two places in town where you can hire them. We also enjoyed the fact that by staying in Hattem, we were experiencing how Dutch people live. Most people spoke English but we didn't meet any other english people whilst we were there and it felt 'off the beaten track'. A tip for english visitors: none of the shops/supermarkets in Hattem accept credit cards. It is debit card or cash only. We also found this to be the case in other smaller places we visited. Hattem is also on the edge of the Veluwe park region and within that region, we found many things to do. Top of our list was the Wallibi amusement park, Klimbos high ropes parks (there are a few to choose from) and the Kroller Muller museum in which you can see many original Van Gogh paintings and also go for long bike rides on the free 'white bikes' provided in the park. We found getting around Holland generally, on the wonderfully smooth Dutch roads, so easy and we would love to return to the area. You will be hard pushed to find...

Hello Allison, Thanks for your comprehensive feed back. This wil help new guest to get a more complete view of the house and surrounding. Nice to hear you like our place and enjoyed the environment for making trips. And indeed most dutch shops don't accept creditcards. I can imagine this can give trouble. Many thanks for leaving the house so properly. Kind regards, Nina

We choose this house because it was in the countryside and area looked very idyllic, beautiful and peaceful. On those parts the house met our expectations. The place was lovely but we didn't realise that the house is right next to the host's home. Therefore the experience was not as private as we were wishing for. Hosts are very welcomming and sweet, but we weren't prepared to noises from trimming fences, lawnmowing and kids kicking the ball to the walls.

Hi Vesa, I am very sorry you heard the children, unfortunately this happened apologize for this. Lawnmowing makes noise but is a conventional and a required activity to take care of the property on the countryside. Kind regards, Nina

Het is een prachtig, bijna nieuw huisje. Met alles erop en eraan. Ze bracht een heerlijke aardbeien taart mee bij de ontvangst. Het was ook geen enkel probleem, dat er een paar nachtjes familie kwam logeren.

Well, we have just returned from a wonderful nine-day stay at De Vijzel (the Mortar, so called as the countryside was full of medicinal herbs and apothecaries used mortars and pestles to make their medicinal concoctions). Nina and Ariem were exemplary hosts. Leaving us some home-made jam and bringing us chocolate and strawberry tarts during our stay. We informed Nina we had to shorten our stay by one day a few weeks in advance and we were immediately credited with one days's rent - most fair. The chalet was immaculately clean, and practically and comfortably furnished and fitted, IKEA style (nothing wrong with that). The large living space downstairs had a dining table and four chairs, a three-seater sofa and two single armchairs and a well-equipped kitchen. There was also a smallish (21 inch) flat TV with a separate radio/DVD player with a selection of DVDs to watch. Off the downstairs room was a large shower room with a toilet with new, clean fittings. The front of the chalet was a small garage (no car) where the washing machine was situated. This is used by Nina and family for storage for bicycles and tools etc. Upstairs were a large double bedroom with an incredibly comfortable wide double bed and a smallish bedroom with two single beds and a curtained-off hanging space. There were a few storage spaces for clothes, but a shortage of shelf space. Getting between floors could be quite problematic for people with reduced mobility or young children. The stairs were very steep and were open on one side. We unpacked the suitcases downstairs and took our clothes upstairs. Morning tea in bed wasn't possible (but was made up by tea in the rear porch overlooking the garden and verdant countryside). It is really tranquil and peaceful, although we were woken up one morning by a cow lowing noisily. The Chalet is situated next to Nina's house (although she and her family were unobtrusive) in a rural part of Hattem, a small village with a historical centre with many restaurants and bars well worth a visit. There is a large supermarket and pharmacy about 15 minutes' walk away. It is about 15 minutes from Zwoller by car, a Hanseatic city with a larger historical centre and train connections to all of Holland. I would, however, recommend renting a car rather than relying on public transport from Hattem. Hattem is not central for the main tourist sites: Amsterdam, Keukenhof and Kinderdijk are all 90 to 120 minutes brisk drive but is a peaceful refuge in the Northern half of the country for exploring the less well known, but still beautiful parts of Holland. We shall be pleased to return to De Vijzel next time we visit Holland.
