Hebridean Northern Lights View is a clifftop apartment which sits atop the Aird Uig beach. With Europe's most remote record and bookshop next door, you are in a completely self-contained two bedroom apartment with its own kitchen and bathroom plus en suite shower room. It has a separate entrance from the rest of the house, so it is very private - although we are just next door if you need anything. We also run Europe's most remote record and bookshop, which you are welcome to browse any time.

O espaço
The building is also now home to Britain's most north westerly book and record shop, with a carefully curated selection of vinyl and second hand books, mostly by Scottish musicians and writers.
As well as offering AirBnB accommodation, the building hosts artist residences and is used as rehearsal space for new theatre and music projects on the island. Laura also runs youth theatre classes on a Friday afternoon in our studio space. In our first year we have hosted musicians, visual artists, film-makers and theatre-makers and we are currently developing three new theatre projects from the building. By staying at Hebridean Northern Lights View you are directly funding the arts.

Onde estará

Aird Uig, Scotland, Reino Unido

Hebridean Northern Lights View is located on a clifftop at the most north westerly point in Britain, with breathtaking views of the Atlantic ocean. On a clear day you can see the Flannan Isles, 32km away, and (if you’re lucky) whales swimming; on a very clear day you can see St Kilda. On a clear winter night it is one of the darkest places in the country, with spectacular views of the Orion Nebula, the Milky Way and Great Andromeda. The local area – a former RAF radar station – is now run by Gallan Head Community Trust as a bird sanctuary and site for public art and tourism initiatives. Eagles can frequently be spotted overhead.

Take a short walk up the hill and you will find The Edge Cafe, one of the best cafes on Lewis - Fiona is a fantastic cook and will give you a warm welcome. Continue to the top of the hill and you will find an extraordinary landscape with a loch and a series of striking concrete structures left over from the old RAF base, as well as new additions created by local residents. Look out for our bird murals, Lewis chessman statues and a hidden labyrinth. A short walk down the hill is a dramatic stony beach, easily accessible via a new path built by the community last year, leading to a picnic bench by the shore.

A short walk up the hill to Gallan Head is an incredible series of cliff walks and viewpoints to sea (next stop, Iceland!) and the standing remains of the WWII radar installations which have been repurposed by the Gallan Head Community Trust and were painted last year by visiting French graffitti artists working with the local young people.

Location: Aird Uig, Eilean Leòdhais, The Outer Hebrides, HS2 9JA

Area profile: 40% population Gaelic speaking

On the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, view of the Flannan Isles and sea stacks out the front of the house and view of St Kilda on a clear day. Very remote, national scenic area, two minutes walk from dramatic beach, special càfe, next to Gallan Head observation point, 6-10 minutes drive to diverse historic locations such as: Dùn Boreanais, Traigh Uige (where the Lewis/Uig chessmen were discovered), Bhaltos peninsula and 7 dramatic sandy beaches. Village shop, fuel, community shop, cafe, community centre and hall, and Uig Sands restaurant only 6 minutes drive in Timsgarry. 30 minutes to the famous Callanish standing stones, and historic blackhouses and Iron Age Broch at Dun Carloway. Public bus service and community liftsharing available around Uig itself and to Stornoway town centre.

Uig Area:

Taking its name from the Norse word for “bay” the Uig districts sits around an inlet on the West Coast of the Isle of Lewis and offers a range of refreshing opportunities and activities for those who come to explore.

With its stretches of Atlantic coast bordered by windswept shifting sand dunes and rich machair grasses, the Uig district is a great place to experience the energising effects of Lewis’s life on the edge.

Soak up the unique Atlantic island atmosphere with a walk at Berie sands, where you will be following in the footsteps of the peoples of the past, whose ancient hut circles were discovered by archaeologists nearby or carve your own path at nearby Ardroil Sands where warm shallow Atlantic waters and consistent winds mean the beach proves a popular spot for kiteboarding and windsurfing as well as being the place where the famous Lewis Chessmen were found – as marked by the giant wooden replica that stands sentinel at the side of the road to the shore.

Head for the long beautiful beaches of Valtos Peninsula to indulge your inner geo-geek and discover the different types of sands at Cliff – with grainy yellow quartz and white shell reef sand both found here.

If all this outdoor activity has left you in need of a different kind of refreshment you are in luck, since the Uig district is home to the Outer Hebrides only legal distillery, Abhainn Dearg – which is reclaiming a huge chunk of Hebridean history and heritage. The distillery is open for informal visits, tours and if you are lucky tastings!

Alternatively, food and drink can be found at the Loch Croistean Cafe, a former schoolroom that now serves as something of a local lounge, offering tea, coffee, home baking and light meals (including children’s and vegetarian options) in a really relaxed atmosphere.

Other options include the cafe at the Uig Community Centre or you can grab something to go from the Uig Community Shop – which stocks everything from essentials to local specialities as well as offering vending and microwave facilities and seating – before heading out to explore some more.

Make sure you don’t miss Mealista Beach, with its great selection of rocks and rockpools as well as a viewpoint to Scarp –the launchpad for the rocket post experiments of the 1930s or the road to Islivig and with its outstanding views to the Flannan Islands – home to one of Hebrides most enduring mysteries. These outlying islands give a real feel for this island’s amazing location on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, more of which can be discovered on boat trips from nearby Miavag pier.

There’s a cafe in Aird Uig which is open every day except wednesday, she also does evening meals by arrangement and it has a gift shop. In addition there are excellent restaurants, one in Timsgarry called Uig Sands https://www.uiglodge.co.uk/uig-sands/01851 672 396, and one you’ll have driven past about 12 minutes before you got to Aird and it’s called Loch Croistean (it’s gorgeous, in the old schoolhouse, and Marianne that runs it is a brilliant host!) +44 1851 672772

Hello! I'm Laura, I'm an arts director and a mum to three lovely children, ten hens, twenty four sheep and a sheepdog. I do organisational consultancy work and and am a freelance artist, arts writer. I also play music in the band Swimmer One, and noodle about on synths and things. The profile here doesn't let you add Scots Gaelic as a language, but I'm a fluent Gaelic speaker and happy to converse in Gaelic, or if you're new to the language give you a few phrases to take home. I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you
