Comfortable, fully equipped and very private oceanview two bedroom jungle villa above the rainforest canopy within the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, where every morning, afternoon and evening you will be treated to a memorable wildlife show.

We are a 10 minute walk to the beach, but highly recommend a vehicle, preferably a 4x4, to access the property.

O Espaço

It's not just another house. It's an experience unlike any. Welcome to your own National Geographic! Villa Toucan is a private oceanview and rainforest villa that sits on edge of the virgin rainforest where guests are immersed in the energy, sounds, sights, smells and awe of the rainforest and its wildlife - all from within the comforts of our 2 bedroom villa.

Villa Toucan is located within the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge in Punta Uva on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. The house is 1 km from the turquoise colored waters of the Caribbean Sea where you can enjoy beautiful virgin beaches, snorkeling over the coral reefs, kayaking, wildlife hikes, horseback riding and just plainly relaxing.

Guests at Villa Toucan are assured to see dozens of toucans everyday in addition to several kinds of monkeys, sloths, colorful frogs, morpho butterflies, hummingbirds, countless varieties of birds and exotic insects.

Designed as a vacation house for families and honeymooners, the villa comes fully equipped and can comfortably sleep up to 4 people. There are 2 private bedrooms, each with its own private balcony, outdoor bathroom and private garden, a full kitchen, dining area, a wildlife terrace and our new Hammock hut. Guests rent the entire house - whether you are one or four people.

The master bedroom includes a queen sized bed and the second bedroom has 2 twin size beds - perfect for kids - or can convert to one large king sized bed. Each bedroom has its own private balcony overlooking the rainforest and large exterior outdoor bathrooms. The floors and cathedral ceilings are made of beautiful local hardwoods.

Both bedrooms come fully furnished with linens and pillows, beach and bathroom towels, clothing hangers, ceiling fans, a working desk, bedside tables and lamps, comforters for cool nights and hand picked literature on local topics of interest. There is also a hidden locked safe where you can protect your valuables.

Though we are a 10 minute walking distance to the beach down our gravel road, we highly recommend a 4x4 vehicle to get to the property and around town. One can enjoy the property without a car, but most have been happy to have had one ;). Please ask if you have any doubts.

Interação com hóspedes

We live on the property, approximately 100 yards from Villa Toucan, leaving you your full privacy, yet we are always available to entertain or ask any questions, or offer local recommendations.

Outras coisas a ter em conta

We are located on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica at the very end of the road near the Panamanian border. It is a 4-4.5 hour drive from San Jose, the capital, where the main airport is. It's a bit of a drive, but certainly worth it! We will be happy to recommend various transportation options including car rental, shuttles, or even white water rafting on the way down or back up!

We stayed in Tucan villa for our honeymoon and enjoyed everything about it! The villa was extremely clean, secluded and beautiful. The villa has a small garden out front and the outdoor shower is enjoyable. Every night we got to experience howler monkeys and every morning the birds, felt like our own personal zoo. Also the walk to playa uva (which is the best beach in town) is only about 15minutes. Manuel was a great host, he was welcoming and let us know he has a open door policy if we needed anything! I would most definitely return! Thanks for the great experience !

Villa Toucan is a very beautiful house located in the Manzanillo Refuge. The view is spectacular, we had the chance to see a lot of animals such as monkeys, toucans, frogs etc. The housekeeper was nice enough to do our laundry and the daughter of Manuel welcomed us warmly. However, there were a few cons during our stay : - safety : unfortunately, there are no keys to lock the doors of the villa. We have been using Airbnb for years and this is the first time the owner doesn't have the keys of the house that he is renting. Because it is located in the Manzanillo Refuge where several aggressions happened against tourists, we didn't feel very safe, even though Manuel assured us it was. - it's an open house. When it gets dark around 5pm, unless you are ok with sharing the place with a lot of insects, you will be confined in the bedroom. Even then, you cannot really let the lights on inside as insects/mosquitoes get in easily. Although the open bathroom is great at day time, it becomes a mission at night to use the toilets outside. - communication: the one time we asked for advices about what to visit around we couldn't get any answer from Manuel or his "management team" on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN). Overall this is a beautiful house with a great view but, for this price, we expected a better experience.

Resposta de Manuel:
Thank You Elise for your comments. We always welcome constructive comments so that we can offer the best possible experience to future guests. I would like to address you "cons" and hopefully clarify those issues for you and potentially future guests. Keys on doors: This is true. We don't have keys for the doors. The house / property are very safe. We leave the keys on the our car and house doors unlocked. As a result, never had a problem. We have staff on the property all day and we are on the property almost every evening. There is a locked a gate as well, keeping possible intruders out. We do offer a large safe in the bedroom and recommend putting your valuables in it when going out. One of the unique aspects of Villa Toucan and Villa Macaw is safety! The property is sufficiently isolated that it is also very safe as a result. We don't advertise it in town and don't have signs. Insects: This is also true. The property is within the Gandoca Wildlife Refuge, which is a tropical rainforest jungle. There is wildlife. There are insects. Despite the fact we may have millions of different species, with a few very minor exceptions, none of them bite - except the rare but notable bullet ant ;) (3 bites on 12 years) We rarely have mosquitos, due to an equilibrium of other living things. They get eaten ;). During this time of year (September/October) we actually have significantly less insects and almost all our guests have enjoyed being outdoors into the late evenings, enjoying the moonrises, starry nights and catching a few owls. The bedrooms are well screened and keep most insects out. Even though the rooms are well protected, if you are uncomfortable with insects, Villa Toucan is not for you. Communication: We take great pride and effort in making ourselves as available to guests prior to, during and even after your stay. We create a private chat with each guest so that we can answer any questions or concerns. I, my daughter, our management office and sometimes housekeepers are on same the chat. We were surprised to learn of this comment from you as we did answer every single question within usually 2-5 minutes. There was one question which indeed not get answered - out of many - and we certainly apologize for that. It must have gotten buried in the chat. If you review most past guests - our responsiveness to questions and needs is one thing that almost every guest has noted - and appreciated.

Villa Toucan looks exactly as beautiful as on the photographs, but it is better to experience it live with all the sounds around, a full immersion into the jungle. A colibri came to visit us in the bedroom for couple of seconds. The trees are immense, the frogs tiny and on the horizon is the ocean. It's the perfect place to chill or to start excursions into the Manzanilla reserve. The best beach is more or less straight down from the house to the sea, passing through a spectacular mangrove forest. Manuel is an excellent, generous host and answered all our questions immediately. Is is a good idea to bring a headlamp, whether for using the bathroom at night or watching owls.

It was a very quiet and peaceful retreat for us. We checked in with a welcoming cat, waiting tirelessly for our arrival in the evening. We had a nice view of the forest and the wildlife. The open kitchen is gorgeous and we enjoyed our stay very much. I would consider coming back again for our next trip.

This place was breathtaking, the view is just out of this world and we had an amazing time. We blew a tire on our car one day and were making our way down the hill when Manuel offered us a ride and then called a cab for us, so thoughtful and highly appreciated! Our 4 year old was obsessed with the cats that come to visit and didn't want to leave lol Can't wait to come back! Albert and Oksana

I have lived in Costa Rica Rica for 14 years. Moved down from Miami, though I am originally French.

We bought the property with no rad, no electricity, no house and no water. Basically started form scratch and built up my dream.

I started and ran successful real estate agency, but recently decide changes were coming again - so sold it. I currently run a property management and vacation rental business in town.

My passions including gardening, healthy cooking, music, people and photography.

I live with my younger daughter Sara Star and often go back and forth to Boulder Colorado to visit my older daughter Maya Soleil who is in school.
