My airy home with modern decor is conveniently located close to the freeway and St Pete's exciting downtown with fun shops, restaurants, museums and an outdoor market in the wintertime. It's close to parks beach & Tropicana where the Rays play.

I truly regret that Kate was ill throughout the entire month that she was at my house and it is my sincere hope that she is now well. Kate was ill when she arrived at my home--she said she had a "stomach bug." After a few days, as her illness worsened, I encouraged her to see a doctor. Since my home is small, we share communal spaces, and since I work part-time at a local hospital, I was concerned about her illness being contagious. I could not go to work until I was certain Kate's illness wasn't contagious--I can't risk infecting patients. Happily it wasn't contagious, but as the month wore on Kate's mental state deteriorated. It's true, I do have a list of parameters for guests (but not a stern list of house rules). Most guests appreciate knowing what's expected of them. And yes, I work hard to maintain a clean, pest free home--no food scraps are left out to entice ants or bugs. Because my house is small and my bedroom is located next to the guest suite, I ask guests to use head sets, earbuds or blue tooth when watching TV. None have complained. But most of my guests are out exploring St Pete, or they're at work. Kate was essentially an invalid and my house is not set up to be a hospital or infirmary. And I am not a nurse. Most of Kate's excursions were to my laundry room where she did her laundry almost daily. In the many years I've lived here, I've never had such a high water bill as I did at the end of last month! When I suggested to Kate that we should be environmentally conscious, she laughed me off saying she wasn't going to be around to suffer the consequences of environmental mismanagement. This selfish attitude was reflected in almost every aspect of her stay in my home. Early on, during Kate's stay, a cushion disappeared from my living room. Since we were the only two people in the house, I asked her nicely if she'd borrowed it. She replied that my 12 year old cat had probably carried it off! I then spent the better part of a day finding a replacement for the cushion. When Kate left I found the original one in her closet. I also found, on her departure, shards of glass scattered around my living area (neither I, nor anyone else, had broken any glass in the month that Kate had been staying with me.) Accidents happen, but generally a guest will notify me if they've broken something, especially if there's a risk of bare feet being lacerated by glass shards. But not Kate. Also, on her departure, I discovered that the sliding door to the cabinet above the desk in my guest suite would no longer slide. The rubber tread had been burned (probably with the hotpot I supplied so she could make hot beverages in her room). The sliding door was in perfect order before Kate arrived. Also on the topic of beverages, Kate liked to drink a lot of a sweet beverage (Coca Cola?) that, because she spilled it on the counter and around the sink, kept attracting ants. When I asked Kate to please wipe up her spills, she became offended. I soon learned not to ask her to respect my property, not to ask her to leave things as she found them, but to simply follow her around cleaning up her messes. On a couple of occasions Kate left the front door unlocked. Worse still, on two occasions she left the back door of my studio (with all my art, tools art supplies and formal wear) unlocked, so that anyone walking down the back alley could have entered the studio unseen. I had, I thought, kindly allowed her to store her suitcases in my studio, but when she came to put them there and remove them, she simply left the door unlocked. Admittedly September was a stressful month for me (dealing as I was, with the anniversary of the loss of a loved one and watching my oldest and closet friend succumb to cancer). But by far the most stressful aspect of the month of September was coping with Kate. As an Airbnb SuperHost I have, over almost seven years of hosting, never had to deal with such a self-centered guest. Kate is a ballroom dancer and she certainly dances to a different drummer! As a matter of course, I always ask guests who don't have reviews on Airbnb to give me the contact information of two references. I never saw Kate's references--she did not, as she says, "furnish me with exemplary references." Airbnb reviews are important to a host and the lack of them, when someone has been using Airbnb for over four years, is unusual. I am convinced that clear communication of expectations, and potential issues, is an essential aspect of being a good host. For this reason, when things seemed to be getting out of hand, I did ask Kate to meet with me to go over the problems. I in no way "demanded a confrontation." I don't believe Kate is a good fit for Airbnb. she would be much better off in the first class hotels that I gather she is used to.

It seems we had some areas of miscommunication Kayla. First, the "rules:" I do have a few basic requests--that guests remove their street shoes when in my house, that they don't smoke or do drugs in my house and that they observe the "quiet time" from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. I always try to be home when guests arrive so I can welcome them and help orient them. Having been an Airbnb guest myself on a few occasions, I've appreciated my hosts showing me around. When guests arrive I show them where the light switches are in their room, how they can adjust the air conditioner in their room so they can be comfortable, where their shelf is in the fridge, where the recycling goes and how to use their keys so they don't get locked out of the house and where to park their car so they don't have it towed. As for a couch, in fact there are two in the living room, but since my office is an extension of the living/kitchen area I don't have the TV there as it would be very distracting--I keep it, instead, in the guest suite where there is a comfortable chair for relaxing, reading or watching TV. As for my cat, I have on rare occasions, asked my guests if they would mind feeding my cat, which, as you know, spends most of her time outdoors and uses the litter box only when it rains. I only make this request when I'm out-of-town (which is seldom) and if a guest is at all hesitant about feeding her, I have my assistant who lives nearby come and feed her. But you expressed no reluctance so I wasn't aware there was a problem. I left a large box of cat litter next to the recycling bin when I went out of town. It was still there when I returned. As for the bathroom, yes, it's small--I converted a closet into a bathroom a few years ago. But it gives my guests the privacy of having their own bathroom ensuite. To be fair, I did ask you on a number of occasions if you had everything you needed. You never mentioned that you had difficulty using the washer and dryer. I've been an Airbnb host for over six years and have had numerous guests who used the washer and dryer regularly. I would have been happy to show you how to use them had you asked. As for coffee, I showed you where to find the coffee beans during my "long orientation," plus the coffee grinder and a French press which, in my opinion, make the best coffee. Again, I would have been happy to show you how to use a French press had you asked. I admit that I'm particular about cleanliness and about leaving foodstuffs around because in Florida, if one leaves food lying out, the ants and other bugs will surely come in spite of the fact that I hire an exterminating service to treat my house quarterly. As for the towels--I am mystified to read that you "were only allowed 2 towels for a month." There was a linen closet (unlocked) with plenty of towels a few feet from your bedroom door. All you had to do was ask me for fresh towels and I would have been happy to supply them. Since you didn't ask, I assumed you'd washed the towels that were in the guest bathroom when you arrived. Had I not been home when you needed that, or anything else, you could have emailed me -- as you did when the air conditioner failed. As you mentioned, I responded right away even though I was on another continent. As an Airbnb Super Host it's my aim to keep my guests happy and, based on over 100 reviews, they generally are happy. I regret that your experience was not what you had hoped it would be. You stated in your private feedback on my listing, "I think Rose Marie is a kind person and a good host, I appreciated her paying for emergency service when the air conditioning broke, and loved that she put fresh flowers in my room when I arrived." I'm happy that your stay in my home wasn't entirely unpleasant and I wish you luck with your future Airbnb stays (Website hidden by Airbnb)
