Rui and his wife contacted me an hour after their midnight check-in to mention their concerns about the state of the cleaning, and the cleaning lady went around the following morning to clean everything that they pointed out (she had also already cleaned the apartment 2 days before the check-in). I don't see how more could have been done to satisfy them on this front. There are some scuffs in the dining area where previous guests have scraped the chairs and their bags against the walls, but this clearly cannot be repainted after every visit and while it might temporarily not be in as-new condition, the slight cosmetic markings on these walls between repaintings do not affect guests' use of the apartment at all. Immediately after they first mentioned this (and had asked for a price reduction on the already steeply-discounted rate they got at the last-minute), I offered to go through picture by picture in person with Rui to demonstrate that it is in fact precisely as shown in the profile, but he said it wasn't necessary and perhaps he had overreacted. I also offered that if they were truly unhappy with the apartment that they could leave with no charge for the time that they had already stayed there. I want my guests to be happy in my apartments (as can be seen from other guests' reviews of this and my other apartments), and I consider it a personal failure if that doesn't happen despite my best efforts. I am disappointed to find out after their stay that it appears to have been a failure in this case, but I do not see what more could have been done to attempt to accommodate them.
