Casa de Luz is a beautifully restored and upgraded 250-300yr old traditional ‘Moorish’ casa, which has been designed for self-catering perfection for up to 10/12 people.
The casa is in the village of Pitres, which is one of the bigger villages of the High Alpujarras – the beautiful mountain region on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range in Andalucia Spain.
Las Alpujarras attract hikers, walkers, mountain bikers, horse riders etc. from all over the world to enjoy the many ancient mule paths and goat tracks, as well as the amazing stone terracing and irrigation channels which zig-zag the region for hundreds of kilometres.
The village is well situated as it is a hub for most of the main walks, and it has many amenities : bank, supermarket, clinic, pharmacy, post office as well as bars and restaurants.
The beaches of the Costa Tropical are just over an hour away, as is Granada where the wonderful Alhambra Palace presides over the old city, the ski slopes behind glistening rose and gold at the winter sunsets.
Casa de Luz-House of Light
Known locally as Caseron [the big house], Casa de Luz is just that – 2 floors of 250sq m each, the ground floor being the old working area where the wine for the area was made, with a bodega and pressing room, where the animals were kept and the grain stored. The animal quarters are now an internal patio with small pool and cool relaxing area - lovely in summer. The bodega remains as a bar and fiesta place.
Upstairs is the living area with a large terrace that bridges the road leading out of the village. The terrace is beautifully planted – hanging baskets and lots of pots of flowers and shrubs – and shaded by a large awning and umbrella for the table and chairs, but still leaving space for sun lounging and to BBQ.
There are 5 bedrooms each with a double or 2 singles – the two large rooms can each have an extra bed. There are 2 lounges, one off the terrace, the other, more cosy, has the wood burning ‘chiminia’ and the TV. The bathroom needs to be seen, and has 2 round showers, a bath with shower, basins and 2 toilets – there is another toilet downstairs.
The kitchen/dining room is another wonderful place for easy cooking and socialising – a magnificent table seats up to ten and is easily served from the kitchen, which is any cooks heaven.
