This fabulous apartment occupies the entire top floor of historic Craster Tower, a superbly preserved Grade 2* country house dating from the fifteenth century, built around a 14th century Pele Tower. Craster Tower has been in the same family for over 850 years. Refurbished to the highest standard, the apartment provides elegantly decorated and furnished accommodation, with stunning views on all sides. The rooms are exceptionally spacious, with many original features retained including decorative coving, ornate stone fireplaces and a fine Venetian chandelier in the drawing room. The apartment has its own front door, giving access to a large garden area with a patio with cheminea and lighting, garden furniture, barbecue and large trampoline. There is a tennis court available for the use of guests. The picturesque fishing village of Craster is a short walk down a footpath through woods and fields. The tiny horseshoe shaped harbour was built to commemorate a member of the Craster family, which has been associated with the area since the early 12th century. The fishing industry has for centuries been the mainstay of the village economy, and today crabs and lobsters are the chief catch. The smokehouse, where herring are smoked to produce the renowned Craster kippers, is at the heart of the village and has been run by the Robson family since 1905. There are exhilarating coastal walks passing some dramatic scenery, including one from the village along to the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. Alnwick Castle and Gardens are 7 miles away. Warkworth Castle, Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island, the Farne Islands and the Cheviot Hills are all within easy reach. Superb beaches - sand-yachting at Bamburgh, jet-skiing at Beadnell and sandcastle-building at Embleton! Outstanding opportunities for ramblers and bird watchers. 5 golf courses are within 20 minutes. And of course "Dark Skies" at Kielder. We are happy to welcome up to 2 well-behaved dogs, for which there is an additional charge of £20 per dog. We ask visitors not to smoke in the apartment. Eating out in Northumberland has recently become possible! We now have a number of excellent restaurants within easy driving distance - whether the Jolly Fisherman or the Fish Restaurant in Craster itself (you can walk it!), or the Cottage Inn in Dunstan (a 3-mins walk over the road!) - the Tree House in Alnwick Gardens - the Mizzen in Bamburgh - or the Salt Water Cafe in Beadnell to mention but a few.

É uma propriedade bonita, espaçosa, limpa e muito bem equipada, apenas a 10 minutos a pé da bonita vila portuária de Craster. Fiona e Michael também são ótimos anfitriões, com muito apreciado chá e biscoitos à chegada e gestos atenciosos em toda a propriedade. Está em uma localização excelente, com as ruínas do castelo de Dustanburgh e a espetacular costa da Nortúmbria na porta. Em suma, um lugar realmente especial para ficar.

  • Uma adorável, espaçosa cobertura compartilhada com os proprietários, Crasters-se !!! (É claro, dadas as paredes extremamente grossas: sem brincadeira, elas têm pelo menos 2 pés de espessura! Você não ouve nada de outras pessoas na propriedade, e é muito legal poder conversar com descendentes e Crasters! =) Eles também dão ótimas recomendações locais. Mas a cidade é bem pequena. Apenas ~ 3 restaurantes a uma curta distância, e as ruínas do castelo, que podem ser alcançadas por uma bela caminhada ao longo da costa. Mas a maioria das coisas, você precisará dirigir para chegar. Os bolos mais deliciosos podem ser encontrados ao lado no The Stable Yard. Se você está procurando uma fonte divertida de exercícios, isso também é fornecido no Craster: um trampolim gigante! The bustling harbour and shops are within walking distance, as is a sandy beach, whilst a few minutes' drive brings you to historic Warkworth, with its medieval castle, charming shops and pubs all serving good food. Comfortably furnished, this bright cottage offers two bedrooms, one double and one bunk and a bathroom with a bath for those long soaks after a tiring day on the beach. There is also a shower. A small fitted kitchen and bright sitting room with woodburning stove, TV with freeview and DVD player, books, board games, DVDs and wifi complete this pretty cottage. Why not take a trip Alnwick Castle and Gardens, or discover one of the many coastal walks taking in a pint and a crab sandwich somewhere along the way, the golden beaches are endless and waiting to be discovered. This Amble cottage is perfect for exploring Northumberland and the surrounding area.
    I moved to Amble by the Sea five years ago and I just love it! Here are just a few things; 1. A proper working harbour with sea going boats..when they land the fish, gulls whirl about to see what they can steal and there’s a beach to meander on. There are boats for hire to see Coquet Island..a bird sanctuary about a mile off the coast ...or for fishing trips, at the Harbour too. 2. A lovely, picturesque Marina to have a walk around with a nice bar, with views going up to Warkworth one way and down to the pier the other. Great place to take sunset photos. 3. Last year, Amble won the best coastal High Street. We have a great selection of shops and , at a time when some High Streets are declining, we’re expanding. 4. The Pods..these are upended boats made into little, cute craft and artisan shops. Located at the Harbour, round the corner from the cottage. 5. Great restaurants on the doorstep! No taxi required. The Boatyard has won awards for the last 2 years as the best fish restaurant in the U.K. 6. A good selection of pubs and coffee shops. A new cafe bar has just opened at the Harbour serving terrific food. 7. Lovely walks..by the sea or in the country..Amble is also very cycle friendly..hire bikes are available locally. Kayaks and surf/paddle boards are also available for hire. 8. Golden beaches that stretch for miles...even in the Summer you can find stretches of beach with no one else there! 9. Lots of local picturesque villages..castles..secluded bays..nice pubs..great restaurants..all within a few miles of Amble by the Sea. 10. And ..the greatest Northumberland foible...you can’t go anywhere without people saying ‘hello’ to you. Amble by the Sea isn’t called ‘the friendliest port’ for nothing!

    This large, comfortable room has stunning views over rolling fields. Close to the coast and a 5 minute drive to Alnwick, a 5 minute walk from Alnmouth train station, it's ideal for exploring Northumberland. Ideal for couples or families, the room has a king size bed, sofa bed & if required, a cot. A continental breakfast is also provided in the room. The en-suite bathroom has a luxurious roll-top bath & large shower. Well behaved dogs are welcome.
    You will have use of a large bedroom at the top of our detached family home. The room has a dining table, kettle, and fridge, with tea, filter coffee, sugar, milk, continental breakfast and fruit supplied. The house makes a great base for exploring the stunning coastline, castles and countryside of the local area, and the large comfortable room with a HD TV and Chromecast will give you space to relax during your stay. Well behaved dogs are welcome. The local area has stunning wide open beaches, and is often referred to as 'Doggie Heaven'. We have a large entrance hallway, you are welcome to leave any luggage here if you need to check in early, or if you need later. We often have this arrangements with visitors who take the train.
    Bilton is a picturesque village approximately 1.5 miles from Alnmouth. The area has a range of great walks both inland and to the coast. Nearby Alnmouth is a beautiful village with a range of independently owned cafes, pubs and restaurants. The large, quiet beaches are ideal for families and are very dog friendly.

    A luxury one-bedroom holiday apartment, situated one minute's walk from both Alnwick town centre and the Alnwick Garden; recently refurbished to an exemplary standard with a mix of rustic charm and all mod cons. This apartment will suit a couple, and provision can be made for an infant; unfortunately we cannot accommodate pets.
    This early nineteenth century property was once a Victorian school house, but has been a residence for over a hundred years. In 2015 the property was purchased by its current owner, and no expense has been spared on renovating this beautiful and elegant apartment. The large arched windows have been double-glazed with heritage glass, and the gas-fired central heating system is brand new. Even so, there is a beautiful log-burning stove in the living room fireplace - with fuel provided - so the apartment is truly a cosy space even with its modern, light and airy open-plan aesthetic. Other features include a wet-room with both rainfall shower and handheld showerheads ( the plumbing has also been completely refitted in 2017) as well as underfloor heating; a washing machine and sensor dryer; a fully modern kitchen with a brand new dual fuel cooker, fridge/freezer, kettle, toaster, microwave and dishwasher; a 32” television with Freeview and DVD player; free wifi access; iron and ironing board; inside storage for up to two bicycles; and an outdoor area shared with a second holiday apartment. There is a large breakfast bar (that will also function as a perfect workspace if required), along with a bespoke drop-leaf oak table that is left open in the living room area for evening dining, but can fold away if extra space is preferred. Bedding, towels, a hairdryer, soaps, complimentary shower gel, shampoo and conditioner are all provided. Coffee, tea, sugar and milk will be present upon arrival.
    Hotspur Hill House is situated on a quiet side street of Alnwick, a picturesque medieval market town and the county town of Northumberland. The centre of town is only a two minute walk away, as is the famous Alnwick Garden (situated within the grounds of Alnwick Castle). The Tanners Arms - an award-winning real ale pub and staple of The Good Beer Guide - can be found at the bottom of the street. The coast and nearest beach is at Alnmouth, two miles to the East. Alnwick itself is in the heart of Northumberland: a great base from which to explore our fair county, and easily accessible as it is directly adjacent to the A1.

    My home is a characterful and spacious 100 year old stone cottage in a tiny quiet street. There's 3 comfy bedrooms, new kitchen and lounge with dining table and Netflix. It is a peaceful west facing street nestled in Amble. I now have a luxury 6 person Hot Tub Spa too! Amble, known as "The Friendliest Port", has made the Sunday Times Top 10 Seaside Places to Live List. Northumberland also won Gold in the British Travel Awards 2018, so come and see what all the fuss is about!
    Big lounge-dining room with modern reclining sofas and footstools for seating 6 comfortably. Smart TV with DVD player and a range of dvds for guests to use. A wide range of books and some games for all ages are provided too. There is a brand new kitchen in a country cottage style with modern touches. The house provides all the equipment I have in my own home, plus a full sized dishwasher to save you the hassle of washing up. There is a small private yard to the front which can get a lot of sunshine and is ideal for lazy mornings and summer BBQs. The rear of the property has been completely renovated with a luxurious 6 person Hot Tub Spa fitted at the end of February 2019. This is a high quality hard shell Hot Tub, not an inflatable! The Spa has a solid thermal lid which can be locked in place when not in use, making it child and pet safe as well as keeping it warm and ready for you to use day or night, 365 days a year! There are 3 bedrooms and a family bathroom upstairs. The bathroom has a thermostatic shower in addition to a traditional bathtub depending on your needs. The 3 bedrooms all contain double beds. The largest room has an additional single bed, meaning it can be used for small children, treating the room as a Twin room, or (as it is a quality memory foam mattress) has been praised by guests with bad backs. Utility room washing facilities are provided in the garage for wet and sandy pets who need some extra attention. The street has no passing traffic so is a very safe area for children and pets. Amble has a wide range of shops for you, from unique gift shops and boutiques providing local goods, to brand named convenience stores if you have forgotten anything for your trip. The high street is an easy walk away, but parking is free for 1 hour outside the shops if you would prefer. The take aways and restaurants provide an enormous range of options too, from quick and tasty to award winning dining.
    Hope Terrace is a tiny cul-de-sac of just 4 houses. It is situated in a quiet and private location near the top of the high street, a short walk from the river to Warkworth or Amble Marina in one direction, Amble shops, quayside and the beaches in the other.

We are 15 minutes drive away from Alnwick Castle & Gardens, Dunstanburgh Castle, the Farne Islands, Bamburgh Castle and beautiful beaches. We provide a full breakfast menu and can cater for varying dietary requirements. There is a well stocked courtesy tray, DVD player and small fridge. Evening meals can be provided. Please ask when booking.
    The cabin is a unique space where you can be private, relax and unwind and there is also a guest/breakfast room available for guests in the main cottage with a television, plates, cutlery, glasses etc if you wish to eat in. We are in a central position to explore Northumberland and The Borders and close to many local attractions. There is a BBQ available and summerhouse for the warmer months. Come and explore North Northumberland.
    We are in a small hamlet of six cottages. Cedar Cabin, Broomsyde is the last property up the hill and has the best view of the North Northumberland coast. It is very quiet, lots of bird and wildlife and is great for stargazing on a clear night.

    Beautifully renovated Victorian coach house with dual aspect views on to Northumberland Street from the front and stunning tidal riverside views from the rear. The Coach House sits alongside a prominent Georgian house, which it shares the name - Seafield. The property is located in the very heart of Alnmouth, with the beach, the pubs, the restaurants and the ambience all within touching distance. Access to the Coach House is entirely separate from the main house, via an inviting staircase.
    The Coach House has its own private access and is very much a self-contained apartment. This holiday apartment has been completely refurbished this year, to a very high standard. The Coach House was originally built in the mid 1800's when the entire property was a famous Coaching Inn called The Northumberland Arms. Seafield is a very special property and offers unique views of the tidal riverside.
    If you have ever visited Alnmouth, then I need not say anything. If you have never visited Alnmouth, then you really have been missing something special. With the mainline East Coast railway serving Alnmouth, London Kings Cross is little more than 3 hours away and the same train that leaves Kings Cross is the same train that arrives in Alnmouth.

    The accommodation is a basic cabin set in our private back garden, three minutes walk from Alnmouth railway station on the East coast mainline. It's a twenty minute walk or 5 minute drive to our beautiful local beach. You would sleep in the cabin and use the main house for bathroom/toilet and the kitchen for making drinks and snacks. The house is occupied by three of us- we have a lot of knowledge of the local area and we are active in the outdoors and indoors! (Running and circus mainly).

    The Cottage has been comfortably and tastefully furnished. There are three bedrooms sleeping six comfortably. Upstairs is a double bedroom with kingsize bed and a twin bedroom. Downstairs on the right is a large twin bedroom next to the family bathroom. To the left of the hall downstairs is the sitting/dining room with open fire and well equipped kitchen. The private front garden spreads the width of the cottage and runs straight down to the beach. At the rear there is a small private yard with a shed suitable for storing bikes, bodyboards and buckets and spades.
    Sleepy fishing village with a pub. This is predominantly a locals village and fishing still threads through life in the village. Lobster pots, ropes, tractors on the beach and fishing boats are very much evident. If you time it right you can buy fish straight from the boat.

    Edna's House offers a decent size double room ideal for a couple or single. You're welcome to bring and make your own breakfast. Tiny and remote, Chathill is neatly placed half way between Alnwick and the coast. It has a nearby train station with links to Newcastle for a day's shopping. It is also close to local wedding venues at Ellingham, Newton and Doxford. There is no TV in the house and limited wifi, so staying could be your ideal digital detox. I look forward to welcoming you.
    Edna's House is a semi-detached cottage with a small garden. The house also has a little kitchen, sun porch and living room with open fire. You are welcome to make use of the house alongside me. I have an odd work schedule so I'll let you know when I'm going to be around.
    Chathill is a lovely quiet village. The neighbours are friendly but not intrusive.

    Arkle House is a gorgeous holiday retreat for up to four guests and two dogs, set in the thriving harbour town of Amble with an array shops, restaurants and pubs within a short walking distance. Comprising of two bedrooms – a master bedroom with king-size bed and sofa, and a twin room with en-suite – this is perfect for small families or couples holidaying together. The cosy lounge with wood burning stove is the perfect spot to relax.
    The sumptuous sofas in the living room are perfect for sitting back on an evening, especially with the wood burning stove on in the colder months. You’ll find a fully-equipped kitchen with table for four, as well as a separate dining area seating up to six just off the lounge. Dogs are allowed, and we can also provide a dog sitting service so you can enjoy an evening meal or day out exploring without worrying about leaving your pet in the cottage. Please contact us for more information on our dog sitting service. There's a shared bathroom with bath and shower, as well as an en-suite off the twin bedroom with shower. You'll find a washer, dryer and storage space in the utility room with access to the back garden for spending time outdoors in the summer. The property also offers a gated driveway and use of the garage if needed for a small car. There is off-street parking directly outside of the cottage.     The property is ideally located just a ten-minute walk away from the centre of Amble, with an array of shops, restaurants and pubs.     Visit England Gold Award cottage. The Byre at Bog Mill, Alnwick is situated down a quarter mile private track and overlooks the River Aln, on the outskirts of Alnwick and three miles from beach. A spacious self contained cottage for two with double bedroom. Open plan living area with feature arched windows overlooking the garden. Safe parking is adjacent to the cottage and secure storage for bicycles is available. WiFi is free of charge within the cottage. No smoking. No pets.
    The Byre is recently refurbished self catering cottage. It is one of 3 cottages converted from the former farm buildings of Bog Mill, which is no longer a working farm. I have tried hard to create a space for relaxation and comfort yet fully equipped for all your self catering needs. If possible for weekly bookings a Friday arrival and departure day is preferred.
    The Byre is located within beautiful countryside and overlooking the River Aln yet right on the edge of Alnwick town. Alnwick is interesting and historic with the Alnwick Castle at it's heart. Alnwick gardens created by the Duchess is well worth a visit as is the world famous Barter Books- the perfect warm and cosy retreat all year round. Just a few more minutes drive will take you to some breathtaking beaches and castles galore. A trip further inland will reward you with majestic hills and countryside enough to let you walk for miles probably without seeing another soul if that's what you choose.

Recently refurbished from top to bottom, this perfectly located house is minutes walk to the pub (wellwood arms is our favourite), and all the amenities on Amble Main Street , from Tesco to local butchers , bakers , fresh seafood selling the best Northumbeland has to offer. Great kids park and skate park with football courts a 2 min walk will keep kids of all ages young and old .

    Bumblebee Cottage has a 4*Gold rating awarded by Visit England. It boasts a superb beachfront position (private access), so the sand & Northumberland Coastal Path is on your doorstep. A perfect location in a difficult time.
    4 spacious bedrooms over two floors, one super king size, one king size and two doubles. Large comfortable lounge with plenty of seating for families or groups in front of a modern high power multi fuel stove. Boasting high-end main bathroom with walk-in shower and bath, with another beautiful en-suite with shower and freestanding bath, plus a further single ensuite w/c. A spacious galley kitchen is fully fitted with all appliances and self catering equipment, also the compulsory Nespresso coffee machine (for that perfect morning in front of the sunrise). A large dining area is attached with modern table and seating, with access to a pretty tiled patio area for catching the afternoon and evening sun.
    A local art gallery and community hall which has a regular pop-up cafe and a welcoming family pub/restaurant with stunning views from the decked veranda. The food is excellent, particularly the locally caught seafood (Note - HUGE fish and chips!). Alnwick town is close-by with its popular tourist attractions such as Alnwick Castle (for Harry Potter enthusiasts) and Gardens, with a Treehouse restaurant (and tree canopy walk), Barter Books (the oldest second-hand books store in the UK), which is an old converted train station, dining in the old waiting rooms in front of open fires is a great experience. The children will love the model trains running overhead and the great books section just for them, with beanbags. And furry friends are welcomed in there too. Stunning (and mostly empty) beaches are accessed from the garden (private steps take you down to the beach), or travel (walk, kayak or drive) to beautiful Alnmouth with its wide selection of cafes, restaurants and pubs for a proper holiday feel, or up to fishing village of Craster with its world famous kippers, or to the many other beaches and castles of Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh, Seahouses, Embleton Bay, Newton-by-the-Sea. There are numerous hidden bays and coves that can be easily walked to along the beach or coastal path, so don't hesitate to ask. The Farne Islands with puffins and seals are worth a visit on one of the many boat excursions from Seahouses - not to be missed! Pay a visit to The Ship Inn at Newton-by-the-sea, it doesn't get more picturesque that here for a drink or food! The list is endless in the richly beautiful and historic Northumberland county.

It is a deceptively large property in the centre of town above a sports shop, with large double glazed windows over looking the town, ideal for people watching! Both bedrooms are at the rear of the property, both with double glazed windows. The Apartment benefits from being within easy walking distance to all of the towns attractions including Alnwick Castle, The Alnwick Garden and Barter Books to name just a few.
    The apartment is in the centre of town with only a 10 minute walk to Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Garden. Restaurants and bars are a stones throw away. There is an awarding butchers next door selling fresh meats, ready made meals, pies and sandwiches and a bakers to the other side selling delicious cakes, meals and bread. If an Indian meal is your thing there’s one directly over the road.A drive out to the coast will take 10 minutes as will a trip out over the moors and into the Cheviot hills. It’s the perfect place to stay!

    The Stable at Bog Mill, Alnwick is a two bedroomed two floor property which sleeps 4 people. It has a grand but modern four poster double bed in the ground floor bedroom and 2 single twin beds in the upstairs bedroom. The upstairs area also boasts its own seating and games area with sofa, television and dvd. The downstairs has a large open plan kitchen dining area and lounge area with large screen tv. Free WiFi is available throughout the cottage. The Stable boasts original features, high beams and a real feel of luxury with a high standard of furnishing throughout including a brand new fitted kitchen, breakfast bar and table seating six.     Self catering ground floor, studio apartment located centrally in the town of Amble. Close to all local amenities and excellently placed for those wishing to explore Northumberland. Newly refurbished Harbour Studio offers the option to stay in a King Size or twin beds. A third person can also be accommodated where required. There is kitchen space including fridge and microwave, a seating area, dining area and large en suite shower room.
    Please note: whilst self catering the studio does not have an oven or hob. We offer a small kitchen area with sink, microwave, kettle, fridge and a George Foreman grill. The studio sleeps up to 3 people. The standard bed is super king. We are able to unzip this to make two single beds and a third person can be accommodated on a camp style bed should this be required.     Fondly named the 'friendliest port' Amble is an exciting little town to explore. The Marina and Harbour Village are close by and you are also only a short walk away from numerous pubs, eateries and coffee shops.     Loan End Cottage is a lovely Georgian 2 bedroom cottage located a 7 minute walk from the centre of Alnwick. Off-street parking and own private entrance to the cottage. The owners live next door in the main part of the house, but you'll rarely see them unless you want to!! Living room with log-burner, kitchen, small rear courtyard on the ground floor. Upstairs their are 2 bedrooms - a single bed and a double bed - and a bathroom with over bath shower.
    The cottage has a log-burner (logs supplied), 2 seater sofa and an armchair, good wifi and we are dog friendly. We provide complimentary tea & coffee, sweetener, a jug of milk in the fridge and a pack of biscuits. There are a selection of books and DVDs, CDs and the TV isa large flatscreen with UK freeview with integrated APPS such Netflix, Prime, BBC iPlayer, ITV HUB etc. (You will need your own user ids/log-in details etc to use the APPS.) The Wi-fi is BT fibre broadband, speeds are usually 50MB or more.
    The building is grade 2 listed building with a private driveway away from the main street. It is very quiet but only a short walk to main street. Alnwick is famous for it's Castle, gardens and the coastline is one of the UK's best with large unspoilt beaches and castles galore.

    Craster is an old fishing village. Harbourside House is rated 4 star, Gold by Visit England and sits directly on the Northumbrian Coastal Walk. Dunstanburgh Castle is an easy walk from the house, no vehicles are allowed on this walk. Harbourside has full central heating and is a very popular holiday home for 12 months a year overlooking the sea. Dolphins are often seen just off the coast . Golf courses are nearby, as well as Alnwick Castle, Harry Potter's school, being only 8 miles away.
    One bedroom has king size bed. Second bedroom has king or 2 singles, third bedroom has single bed. Lounge overlooks the sea and harbour and has french windows looking out at the secluded back garden. There is a full bathroom upstairs and a downstairs cloakroom. There is parking for 3 cars at the property.
    Village pub is 100 yds away. There is also a fish restaurant in village attached to a fish smokery , which is very famous. Many castles in area Dunstanburgh, Alnwick, Warkworth, Bamburgh to name a few. Village is very popular with walkers and cyclists doing the Coastal path. Many golf courses to choose from in close proximity. Star gazing is also popular because of the clear dark skies.

    -St Cuthbert at The Old Mill is located in the small hamlet of Littlemill, four miles north east of Alnwick. -Please be considerate when entering & leaving the hamlet to your fellow neighbours, both human & animal ! -The cottage is situated halfway between Alnwick & Craster so is perfectly placed for guests to visit the fantastic coastal spots, castles & stunning Northumberland National Park which are all within easy travelling distance by car. -Craster on the beautiful heritage coastal route is only 2.5 miles away. The picturesque fishing village is world famous for it's smoked kippers & the glorious walk from it's harbour to Dunstanburgh Castle. -Howick Hall Gardens are nearby & well worth a visit, with banks of rhododendrons, camellias & magnolias in the springtime. -A visit to Holy Island, which is reached via a tidal causeway & is famous for the Lindisfarne Gospels, is a must. -Don't forget the pretty village of Bamburgh with its majestic castle overlooking the expansive sandy beach. -Alnwick Castle & Garden, with its spectacular grand cascade waterfall & tree house restaurant, are 4 miles away. St Cuthbert & The Old Mill-A potted history. -As the name suggests The Old Mill was once a water mill & the remains of the mill wheel can be seen at the rear of the property. -If you look to the left while facing the building you will see a field which was once the site of a medieval village known as 'Little Houghton'. Corn mills were a common feature of such villages, so it is likely that a mill has stood at this location since this time. The name 'Little Houghton' was later reused & today there is a nearby village known by the same name. The earliest the mill buildings appear on a map is around 1820. -The lime kiln (Grade 2 listed) on the opposite side of the road approaching the hamlet of Little Mill would have been a large local employer when in use. Extraction started in the 18th century & it was one of the largest in the country with it's own railway siding. The limestone was burnt with coal to produce quicklime for use in fertiliser & mortar. -There was once a railway station at Little Mill (1847 to 1965), families from Gateshead & Newcastle enjoyed holidays in nearby Craster, alighting at Little Mill & walking with their luggage the two miles down to the coastal village. -The Old Mill building was derelict until purchased from the local land owning Howick family in the late 1980's & was subsequently bought by an order of the Catholic church known as the 'Helpers of the Holy Souls' & run by nuns as a retreat. Local legend has it that Maxine Carr, accomplice to the Soham murders, resided here on her release from prison under a new identity. -The two smaller cottages (known as 'hemmels'), St Bede & St Cuthbert were once the home of farm animals but were converted in 2001. In fact, the word 'hemmel' means a simple shelter in a field for cattle or hay. -The current owner bought the house in 2007 & in 2017 extensively renovated the property to make the accommodation more comfortable as well as securing the fabric of the building & outlying grounds for future generations. -The adjacent properties of The Old Mill & St Bede offer further accommodation options & can be booked jointly or separately through Airbnb. -Please 'like' of page on the 'Book of Face' to be kept up to date with all things with regard to St Cuthbert & Northumberland.
