Live high at 2600 ft in our cabin in the clouds.
Our cabin is within 30 miles of at least 10 excellent public golf courses (Crossville is the "Golf Capital of Tennessee"). We can provide guest passes that offer reduced rates at the five Fairfield Glade courses, as well as access to all other Fairfield Glade activities. Pigeon Forge and Dollywood are 1 1/2 hours away and you do not have to spend the night with 30,000 of your new best friends after your day trip.
Renegade Mountain was originally a 6000 acre gated mountain community development built around a ski resort and a championship mountain top golf course. At one time the golf course was rated in the top five courses in the state of Tennessee. The necessary infrastructure (roads, water, power) was put in place for a large recreational and homeowner attraction, but development never reached the expected level. The ski resort failed because it was not cold enough to consistently make snow. The golf course closed in 2010 when the economy, and the golf course economy in particular, crashed.
We discovered this mountain in 2010 while looking for an alternative to a timeshare in Crossville. We immediately fell in love with the mountain and its relative seclusion away from the maddening crowds of the Gatlinburg area. We now own a second home and 2 vacation rentals here.
There are many great golf courses in the area, hiking, 4-wheeling, waterfalls, Indian caves, and other activities close by. Local residents are sparse but friendly and helpful.
The mountain top location offers a 10 degree cooler temperature in the summer than Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga, and there is almost always a cool breeze blowing up the mountain from the west.
Winter brings its own special beauty to the mountain. Fall colors are spectacular, and the renewal of spring brings its own peace and tranquility to our guests.
We love Renegade Mountain for a weekend getaway or a long vacation. Our guests seem to feel the same way about its special charm.
Renegade mountain is home to approximately 70 full and part time residents. Two thirds of the residents live in two sets of condos at the top of the mountain. The remainder live in houses and cabins scattered around the top of the mountain. It is a charming area reminiscent of Gatlinburg to the east of Knoxville, before over development and over population turned that area into a crowded tourist destination.
The road up the mountain is paved and easily driven by any vehicle you might drive, except possibly a dog sled. Curves are lighted at night and the only fairly steep section is the last 1/2 mile to the top. The road is always passable except in the rare event of ice formation on the upper section. We do provide snow and ice removal from the roads when needed. The last 1/4 mile of road to the chalet is on a well maintained, level gravel road. The driveway entrance is lighted with a street light and the driveway is paved.
Our mountain has both paved, gravel, and grassy (mowed) roads available as walking trails. The old paved cart paths from the golf course also attract many walkers and hikers. Strong legs are needs on the many hills of the old course. At the top of the mountain you can stop and enjoy a 100 mile view west towards Nashville, north into Kentucky, and east towards Spring City and Knoxville. Sunsets and sunrises are special events from the top of the mountain. There are also hidden ATV trails both on the mountain and on surrounding mountains. There is always a large gathering of 4-wheeling enthusiasts who meet in Crab Orchard at the Liberty Market gas station every weekend to go riding in the surrounding areas.
Basic food necessities and junk food can be purchased at the two gas stations in Crab Orchard. The Liberty Market station also sells sandwiches and Hunt Brothers pizza if you are looking for a quick meal. For more extensive shopping and dining, venture into Crossville for almost anything you could need. It is about 15-20 minutes to most major shopping and dining. The largest concentration of business is on Hwy 127 (exit 117 on I-40), including Walmart, Lowes, Cracker Barrel, and a bevy of fast food restaurants. The Food City grocery store is on Peavine Road (exit 322) heading towards Fairfield Glade.
