Our holiday cottage situated directly on the sea front is a light, calm retreat. It is located on the beachfront in the heart of Whitstable close to local pubs, restaurants and cafes. The house offers a fluid living / sleeping space full of rustic charm and simple pleasures. Furnished with natural antiques and quality linens this is the perfect place to unwind with a book whilst watching one of the amazing sunsets. We also have a beach hut available.
From the front the garden is crammed with romantic old English planting and overspilling lavender bushes. A bench under the front window allows for sitting and watching the world go by. The cottage faces northwest and all front rooms receive wonderful warm evening sunset light. The area in front of the cottage is pedestrian only which is great for sitting out and enjoying an evening drink or letting kids play safely outside your front door. The beach is pebble and we swim all year round. The groynes provide cosy wind-shelters and the water is often glass-like and still making it ideal for younger swimmers.
The cottage interior is full of original features and is wood floored throughout with salvaged doors / a kitchen made from reclaimed shop fittings and parquet. Many people comment on how spacious the cottage feels. There are two cosy living rooms with working fires and a curtained reading bed with feather mattress, a large light kitchen with a Rayburn, blender, coffee maker and breakfast table. There is also a large dining conservatory with old encaustic tiles and a table seating 8. Attention has been paid to small extras such as dimmable lighting and black out blinds. Mattresses have thick toppers and fluffy feather duvets and pillows. The house is full of books, a record player and radios; there is no dishwasher and no television, we do have WIFI. Tides cottage is a place for slow simple living.
The quirky cobbled garden is planted with lavender and herbs and also has a table that seats eight and a shed with firewood/ deckchairs etc.
We are very dog friendly but would prefer dogs not to jump on the furniture! We also have a small dog bed if requested.
Being a small cottage the stairs are steep- there is no stairgate but doors can be shut to stop children reaching these if necessary. One of the bedrooms is also a mezzanine above the master bedroom and the bathroom is accessed through the master bedroom. This is why the property is only really suitable for one family or very good friends!
We have lived in the cottage as a family with 3 small boys but some people may find the combination of steep cottage style stairs and a mezzanine worrying for them. Due to the cottagey nature of the house taller types may have to stoop to use the shower attachment in the bath.
As we are a seafront property there is no road access directly in front or behind us. Cars can be unloaded in side lanes a 2 minute walk from us either side. The nearest parking is on Nelson Road.
There are instructions on how to use the Rayburn but there is also a convection oven in the microwave and a little portable mini hob.
There is a selection of paper, wooden toys, brio trains and dressing up bits for young children in the chest in the conservatory/dining room.
There are many board games, art books, general literature and magazines throughout the house. We encourage you to rummage in all cupboards!
The cottage is in the pretty conservation area in Whitstable. It is very close to the famous Neptune pub on the beach. (It was voted best summer pub in the Telegraph but with its log burners we love it just as much in the winter!) There is a local shop and cafe that is useful for supplies called 'windy stores' around the corner which also serves the best breakfasts and roasts in town, also freshly baked bread. Coop /Sainsbury's/spar are all within 5 minutes walk.
Turn right out of the cottage and you can walk to the bustling harbour, the castle with playgrounds and then tankerton slopes and on. Stop for oysters, ice-cream and Bloody Mary's on the way! Turn left and walk towards the more rugged seasalter- if you walk for an hour you'll reach the Michelin starred 'Sportsman' pub. Water is great for swimming and the groynes make the beaches nice and sheltered. The beach is perfect for children and provides hours of entertainment for the little ones. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year round and nearly all pubs, restaurants and cafes are hound-friendly.
There are tennis courts by the beach, countless water sports, drop in art, dance, sport and yoga classes..... let us know your interests in advance and we can let you know what's on while you are visiting.
Details of all other events / restaurants and cafes etc will be left in the cottage.
