Hiking

Red Rock Open Space has some pretty spectacular views. You can spend all afternoon hiking around in there. Our favorite loop is the Mesa Trail. It’s a longer trail, 4.5 miles. A shorter version is the Greenlee Trail.

I’m sure you are here for it, but Garden of the Gods is pretty amazing. If you want to hike the whole thing rather than drive around and park, we suggest you drive straight to the Trading Post. From there, you will follow the Strausenback Trail to Scotchman Trail. This will take you into the Main Garden area, a spectacular site. From Main Garden, you will walk west (through the Kissing Camels toward Pikes Peak. Once you get to the road, you will follow the Palmer Trail to Siamese Twins (it’s amazing and where Ally and I got married). Walk to the back side (Pikes Peak side of the Twins) and follow the Siamese Twins Trail to the Cabin Canyon Trail (shorter to the left, longer to the right) and follow that to Balanced Rock. From there, you can follow the trail or road back down to the Trading Post.

Section 16 is a great 5-mile loop. The first part is all uphill and worth it because the views are spectacular. As you start up, just remember to keep following the left trail. If you go right, you’ll get lost.

Pancake Rocks and Horsethief Falls are a great pairing of hikes in the same spot. The Pancake Rocks hike is a longer hike and provides some amazing rock formations and views of the snow-capped Rockies in the distance, and Horsethief Falls is a shorter hike that leads to a modest waterfall. If you do both together, it’s a bit over a 7-mile hike. The trek to pancake rocks is rather steep at points. It flattens out a few times on the hike up before you have one last push to the top. The Falls are recommended to do second. It’s a short ½ mile hike out and back from the split.

Seven Bridges is a great little trail. When you park at the trailhead, you will follow the service road up to the trail, about ¾ mile, then follow the path over the seven bridges. You can keep going and is totally worth it if you’re up to it. You can do a loop around to make it 2.7 miles or go even further for an out and back.

Catamount Falls is a great view of the peak with water below. Parking is a little far away from the trailhead. You have to follow the road up to the trailhead. Do not park in the neighborhood, they will have you towed. Once you get to the trailhead, follow the blue trail to the reservoir. It’s a must do if you are here in the fall because the aspens are a beautiful yellow color.
