San Sebastian’s not just a short hop across the border, it’s our favourite city anywhere. Its beautiful architecture and broad sweep of amazing bay alone make it unmissable, but you need to factor in pintxos too. The Basque take on tapas, pintxos, but San Sebastian’s their home. Risotto of mushrooms and idiazabal (a Basque cheese), gildas (olive, salty Cantabrian anchovy and pickled pepper on a stick), miniature steak with caramelised onion and chips, wafer-thin crepes enclosing prawns and pork. We’ll stop there, but no need for you to …

A film location manager with a script which says “They meet in an idyllic French mountainside village” would look once at Sare and know their work was done. A small but amazing and lovingly looked-after place, its ratio of great restaurants per metre is very high, and it offers one of the best seats in the house when it comes to views of the Pyrenees. It also delivers its rich Basque history in an enlightening and entertaining way, especially in the very well-maintained little town hall, whose museum’s exhibits of the traditional Basque ball game ‘pelota’ are well worth seeing.

Geography’s been kind to its beach (sheltered and safe) and history drips from its winding old streets with their timber-fronted boutiques and fantastic places to eat, drink and absorb what the Pays Basque is all about, including Maison Adam, there since 1660 and the best chocolate shop (they make macaroons too) we’ve ever seen. Better than all this, though, it’s only a ten-minute drive away from Col d’Ibardin campsite.

It’s as Basque as you like, in fact it’s pretty much the area’s economic and political capital, but because it’s a short distance inland it’s not the same tourist-magnet as Biarritz. Having said that, its half-timber buildings, the amount of traditional red and green paintwork and the sense of a city doing something and going somewhere all add up to a place you’re keen to spend time. And that time is as well spent in its Old Town’s many bars and restaurants as anywhere else: just sit out near the river and watch the world go by (and try some ham while you’re there, you won’t regret it).

We doubt you’ll have the place to yourself, but it’s popular for a reason, and the reason is clear once you see the view – and two countries – from the top. The trip on the way up and down is quite a treat too: it’s a genuine old rack and pinion railway train (built in 1924) and the summit, which is 905 metres, will take you 35 minutes to reach.

This is the French proving that a city by the sea doesn’t have to compromise its by-the-sea-ness or its city-ness. Great beaches and properly surfable waves on the one hand, coupled with the authentic swagger and buzz of a city that knows and likes what it has to offer. Which is culture, heritage, nightlife, great places to shop, eat, drink and nose around, and beautiful buildings which hark back to when Biarritz was a mid-19th century rich person’s playground. Its art deco aquarium will probably change forever your view of such attractions, and the city’s well connected, too: to Paris via high-speed TGV train, to Spain by about 12 miles of road.

Parks & Nature

Only a ten km drive from the Col d’Ibardin campsite, the water here is warm and just right for introducing young children to surfing; there are surf schools if you’d prefer they were taught by professionals. It’s a lovely beach with waves the right size for all kinds of activities, including wave skiing and bodyboarding too.
