Sightseeing

Fiskebäckskil and Grundsund are two coastal villages close by on the so called Skaftölandet. Both villages are very popular and belong to the most ”exclusive” areas along the coast. Evenso, as a foreign visitor, you will not feel this, as Swedes always prefer simplicity to brashness. Driving directions: Drive E6 (motorway) towards Uddevalla/Göteborg. After 15 km, turn at Torp shopping centre towards Lysekil. Follow the road towards Lysekil, before turning following signs for Fiskebäckskil and Grundsund. In both villages, there are ample opportunities for lunch and dinner, with plenty of cosy resaturants. Our favourite is Pelle’s Rökeri in Grundsund, at the far end on the left side of the pier. If you walk through Pelles (you can do that even if you’re not staying for food), you reach some beautiful cliffs where you can sunbathe and swim in the most beautiful blue water!

Smögen is THE metropolis of the west coast. It was for long a very important town thanks to its extensive fishing industry. Still today, it is known all over Sweden for its shrimps. Wherever you go in Sweden, chances aret that the shrimps originate from the fish market in Smögen. The village is immensely beautiful, situated on an island. There are a vast number of restaurants, shops and nightclubs on the island. The main drag is the wooden pier, where the boats anchor up five boats in a row alongside each other during the summer. Smögen is one place you definitely don’t want to miss out on during your stay. The best way to get there is to do an excursion in a circle. First you go via Hunnebostrand and Väjern and then you go back via Kungshamn, Hovenäset and Brastad. Our favourite places for a bite are Skärets Krog on the pier and Sea Lodge. The latter is not on the pier, but that makes it even better. After a stroll along the pier, you will enjoy the more secluded location of sea lodge: www.sealodge.se

Marstrand is one of the most beautiful islands/villages along the coast, around 75 mins south of the house. The road there is very beautiful too. Marstrand used to be a royal playground around 100 years ago, and still today, there is an air of exclusivity and posh retreat to the place. It is a village situated on an island, approximately 1 hour from the house, in the direction towards Göteborg. Turn off the motorway just before Kungälv, where there are signs towards Marstrand. The island has a large fortress which played an improtant role in the many battles around the borders between Norway, Sweden and Denmark, some very good restaurants, a Grand Hotel and a beautiful pathway leading around the island (it takes about 1 hour to walk the whole trail, and for large parts of the trail, you will be by yourself). During the last week of June, Marstrand plays host to the largest match race (sailing) in the world, with around 100,000 spectators every year.

The second city of Sweden is indeed one of Sweden’s gems. It was mentioned as one of the 7 places to go to in the world in the Financial Times “how to spend it” magazine a few years ago. It takes approximately 1 hour to drive there. Gothenburg was founded in 1621 by King Gustav II Adolf. The city was laid out with a criss-crossing system of canals, with the help of Dutch settlers. Today, only a smaller number of the canals remain, but where the canals have been filled out, there are today beautiful boulevards, which give the city a feeling of grandeur that you normally find in much bigger cities. Gothenburg was always a large trading city, not least with the East Indian trade and there are many elegant and impressive buildings from the 18th century, when Gothenburg was one of the largest port cities in the world. Among the endless number of sights worth visiting we can mention the amusement park Liseberg, the largets tourist attraction in Sweden with more than 3 million visitors each year, The muesum of World Culture, Universeum, the park “Slottskogen” and the Paddan tourist boats. Personally, we find the pizzas in Cyrano on Prinsgatan the best ones in te world. Why don’t you see for yourself? Otherwise, Gothenburg has no less than 5 Michelin-starred restaurants!

The rock carvings in Tanum are one of the Unesco World Heritages in Sweden. The carvings are from the Viking Age and illustrate aspects of life in those times. There is a museum in Vitlycke: http://www.vitlyckemuseum.se/Kultur_Default.aspx?id=45677 After your visit to the rock carvings, you can have a very nice lunch in Tanums Gestgifveri, in the centre of Tanum. Directions: Drive E6 north and turn at the signs for Tanum.

Hunnebostrand is one of the most genuine villages along the coast with a fairly large year-round population. You find at least 3-4 restaurants. Bella Gästis is the largest, but not the best one. Instead go for the one on the far left side of the village, from where you can cross a small bridge leading to St. Göransö, where there are plenty of nice coves for swimming. Hunnebostrand is very popular among the sailing population and there are some bars with live music during the warm summer nights. If you are in the cabin during the autumn, this is the place to go for lobster fishing. The village is the centre of Swedish lobster fishing with a Lobster Academy. There are plenty of tour operators arranging lobster fishing tours with dinner during October.

The road to the island of Orust is very beautiful and the island contains some of Bohuslän’s real hidden gems. Drive E6 towards Gothenburg and turn at the Torp road junction towards Lysekil. Thereafter, follow the signs for Henån. Once you have reached Henån, you are on Orust. But don’t stop there! Go to see Gullholmen, Mollösund and Hälleviksstrand. All three villages are really pretty and perhaps Gullholmen, which is an island off Orust, is the most spectacular of the three. From Hälleviksstrand, you can take the small boat M/S Strömstierna to the remarkable island Käringön, wher you find Peterson’s Krog, probably the best restaurant on the coast! There is also a rune stone (the only one in Bohuslän) on Orust in Hoga with inscriptions from the Viking Age.

Fjällbaka too is one of the most well known villages along the Bohus coast. First, Fjällbacka is known as the birth village of one of the most famous actresses the world has ever seen: Ingrid Bergman. This fact is commemorated through a statue at the central square which is called Ingrid Bergman’s Square. Secondly, more recently Fjällbacka has become famous from the murder histories of contemporary novelist Camilla Läckberg. However, the village is not nearly as violent as it seems to be in the books. Quite the opposite, this is a very peaceful place for 50 weeks of the year, except for during the last two weeks of July, when it is one of the main villages for the public annual regatta. There are a few restaurants in the village, some beautiful walking trails (there is a canyon leading to the top of a hill which is quite nice, as well as a hotel with some nightlife (Stora Hotellet). Should you long for some nightlife, this could be one of the places to go to (the other being Smögen and Hunnebostrand). A large taxi with room for up to 7 people should cost around 1200 SEK one way from the house (journey time: 40 min).

The capital of Norway is only two hours away by car. It is the oldest capital in Scandinavia, with a 1000 year old history. Oslo lies on top of the Oslo fjord and contains enough sights to keep you busy for two days: The main avenue Karl Johann, the Royal Palace, the Munch Museum, The Wigeland’s Park and the large outdoor park Holmenkollen with its world famous ski stadiums. Don’t forget to visit the new opera house! The city reminds very much of Gothenburg: the same size, the same architecture and the same atmosphere. But beware that Oslo is a lot more expensive, constantly being one of the top 3 most expensive cities in the world.

Väderöarna is the westernmost outpost of Sweden. It is a nature reserve with very particular flora and fauna. You can come here by regular boat ferry from Fjällbacka. There is a pension on the islands that serves food. This is where you go for total peace and quiet, maybe to paint, plan your future och start writing that novel you’ve been thinking about for ages… During the autumn, there are lobster fishing safaris to Väderöarna, which end up with a grand lobster dinner.

The ”Badholmarna” is a cluster of islets that have been connected to each other via a number of bridges and piers. Here there are swimming opportunities for everyone, both the small children and the teenagers who want to jump off a high cliff. Bovallstrand is situated around 25 mins away by car. Get off E6 in northerly direction towards Hunnebostrand and Bovallstrand. You can also choose to follow a route marked by a white flower. This means that the road is particularly scenic.
