Historical

The oldest middelage paved road in Denmark leads to the Castle Ruins of the 700 year old Castle, situated on the small peninsular Kalø. In the surroundings of the ruins you may find medical herbs originating from an old medical herb garden. Kalø Castle Ruins 700 Years As you travel the half-kilometre distance along the causeway to Kalø Castle Ruins you are also travelling 700 years back in time. The longest medieval road in Denmark Arriving at the end of the longest medieval road in Denmark, which was constructed at the same time as the castle, you can easily imagine the life that went on behind the castle walls. King Erik Menved (1274-1319) had the castle built after he had defeated a Jutland peasants’ revolt in 1313. The power of the king The castle is quite modern, e.g. with a flanking tower: the first of its kind in Denmark. Kalø Castle was impressive and nearly impregnable. However, in reality, the castle was built to keep domestic enemies under control, i.e. peasants led by noblemen: the selfsame people the King had forced to build the castle for him in the first place. The prisoner king The most famous prisoner held at the castle was Gustav Vasa, who was imprisoned here from 1518 to 1519, when he escaped. Gustav Vasa was later to become the King of Sweden. Until the introduction of an absolute monarchy in 1660, Kalø Castle served as the manor for all of Djursland. Recycling the castle When the castle was demolished, the stones were spread throughout Denmark and reused e.g. to build Charlottenborg Palace in Copenhagen. The landscape formed by the ice The forests around Kalø Vig include the forest of Hestehave, which offers a view of the castle ruins and the less well-known forest of Ringelmose on the other side of the Molsvej road. The entire area is situated beneath moraines that were formed during the Young Baltic ice advance. The landscape around the inlet seems almost to form an amphitheatre, with seats up on the hills near Rønde town and the inlet and the castle ruins forming the stage. The picturesque Mols Bjerge form the backdrop.

The buildings originate from towns all over Denmark and they have been re-erected in the museum's grounds. From April and throughout the year you can meet the people of yore in the kitchens, the living rooms, and in the grocery shop. The 1920s – modern times have arrived In 1927, the townscape has become modern with cars in the streets, pavements, electric street lamps, telephone poles, and painted wall adverts. Close-up to the Danes' favourite cars in the 1920s If you enjoy or are curious about motorcars, the town district of 1927 in the Den Gamle By has a treat for you at the authentic motorcar dealer and workshop 'Automobilforretning Carl Christensen'. Here you can find superb old cars, a showroom, a spare parts shop, and workshops carrying out engine renovations and bicycle repair. This is a great opportunity to get close-up to the infancy of Danish motoring and learn more about the many fascinating vehicles of the time. Museum of living history You can meet people dressed, working and behaving just like they did in the olden days. They are cooking food, chopping wood, sewing and needling, or attending to customers in the shops. Feel free to stop for a chat with them; perhaps they will tell you to go and fetch water from the well or throw rubbish on the midden. Go for a ride in the horse-drawn carriage, or make a good bargain in the period shops. Have a pint in the beer cellar and enjoy a cup of coffee with cake in the tea garden. In the Festival square the whole family can race on stilts, play skittles, or have fun on the swing boats and on the merry-go-round. Special exhibitions and smaller museums on site During the year there are theme days, concerts, activities for children, and a number of special exhibitions. The Den Gamle By museum grounds are also home to other smaller museums, including The Jewellery Box, The Decorative Arts Gallery, The Danish Posters Museum, and The Toy Museum and The Aarhus Stories with 700 square meters of underground exhibition space dedicated to portraying the birth, development, and potential future of Aarhus. Go on a virtual time travel through The Old Town Walk through the old, narrow cobbled streets and alleys, and admire the intriguing architecture of the past. Fregatten Jylland A great experience on Fregatten Jylland With 102 metres from bowsprit to stern, 44 cannons and 57 metres to the top of the masthead, Fregatten Jylland (the Frigate Jutland) is an experience with both room and entertainment for the whole family. The exhibition hall provides the opportunity for immersion in the ship’s very interesting history, and aboard the ship you can experience it full speed ahead when the museum’s guides show and explain how the drama unfolded aboard the big warship, which later became both the royal yacht and summer holiday digs for school children from the province. Today, the ship is well-restored and ready to receive its guests in Ebeltoft, just as fine and well-kept as on the May day in 1864 when the ship and crew met their enemies at Helgoland. For the museum’s guests, there are lots of opportunities to do things, even trying and experiencing life on the seas more than 100 years ago: - Help load a 30 pound muzzle-loading cannon and remember to hold your ears during the cannon show. - Go on a sailing tour with the Frigate’s old auxiliary boat “Barkassen” on Ebeltoft Bay. - Go with the climbing instructor 23 metres up in the rigging and see the ship, the town and the bay from above. - Try your strengths against Kalle Krudt’s treasure map, the Discharge Book, the interactive games of the exhibitions and the interesting historical crafts such as sail trimming and rope-making. - NEW THIS YEAR – go on a cruise with Europe’s Father-in-Law, King Christian IX, and his large family. The exhibition opens in summer 2016.

Gammel Estrup Driving along the main road from Grenaa to Randers you pass Gammel Estrup on your right-hand side shortly after leaving Auning. On the left-hand side of the road is Helligbjerget (Holy Hill), which down the ages has served as a landmark and viewing point. The manor is a Renaissance building in red brick with a courtyard surrounded by a moat. For over 600 years Gammel Estrup was passed down by inheritance - until it was finally sold in 1926. As you pass the manor you can also see the extensive farm buildings. A tour of Gammel Estrup’s magnificent halls and rooms gives unique insight into 600 years of the grand life of the Danish aristocracy. The individual rooms are furnished to show how the rooms might have been laid out during the centuries when the manor was inhabited. A new exhibition gives the Manor House Museum’s version of life downstairs at Danish manor houses around the year 1900. The servants’ quarters consist of the servants’ dining room, where all the staff working at the main building ate their meals, the housekeeper’s room next door to it and in particular the manor house kitchen with its great wood-fired kitchen range dating from the 1880s. In the kitchen, the cook can often be seen hard at work cooking or baking at the hot kitchen range. At Gammel Estrup, a lot of the original gardens have been preserved. The natural focus of the gardens is the two elegant orangeries from 1725-26. These beautiful buildings with their great windows were used to protect the delicate garden plants from frost during the winter. A new exhibition about manor house gardens during the Renaissance and Baroque periods opens in May. For more information, visit www.gammelestrup.dk.

Taste experiences Ebeltoft Gårdbryggeri At the Ebeltoft Farm Brewery in Western Denmark we produce craft beer and fruity sodas. The point of everything we produce has always been to create great taste and interesting flavours using whatever is necessary to achieve these goals. A big part of what we do is experimenting. We are constantly engaged with trying out new flavours and creating new tasts for future products. Before being launched all of our products has been through a testing period where we refine the taste and flavour, making sure that everything is just right. Our Sodas To our mind a soft drinks needs to be more than simply a cold refreshment. Like a good craft beer or a nice wine, we believe a fruity soda can be a delicious drink to be enjoyed on special occassions or as a non-alcoholic alternative on a night out. Surrounded by scenic green woods and with a view across the ocean, the fresh furtile atmosphere surrounding the Ebeltoft Farm is what we try to create a taste of in our sodas. In every bottle of soda we use plenty of whole fruits and berries as well as fresh herbs and spices in order to bring about a delicate reminder of the nature and wildlife of fields and forests. All our sodas have the simple base recipe of clear water from the Danish underground, loads of whole fruit, and a bit of cane sugar and carbonation. Our Beers As a small craft brewery we spent a lot of time experimenting with our beer flavours. As the Danish seasons change, so does our mood and the type of beer we feel like drinking. For an up to date status of which kind of beer we are currently engaged with please visit our blog or contact the brewery.

Grenen Denmark's northernmost point where the 2 seas the Skagerrak and Kattegat meet. It is a fascinating experience to stand on the tip of Jutland and the European mainland and watch the waves from the two seas beat together and break the Skaw Reef. But be careful and be aware that due to the very strong current it is strictly forbidden to bathe here - it is very dangerous. A compass in the sand hill directly south of the tip of Grenen shows that it actually points east. Enjoy the area's seals which have completely become accustomed to tourists and often rest on the beach in the middle of people crowd or bunkers in the water. From the parking area you can from Easter through week 43 run with "Sandormen" on Your way to "Grenen". "Sandormen" has been running tourists to Grenen for over 50 years. Guests who choose to go by themselves, will east of the museum be passing poet and painter Holger Drachmann´s grave in the dunes.

he Little Mermaid At Langelinje Pier you will find one of Copenhagen's most famous tourist attractions: The sculpture of The Little Mermaid. 23 August 2013 she turned 100 years old. Unveiled on 23 August 1913, The Little Mermaid was a gift from Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen to the City of Copenhagen. The sculpture is made of bronze and granite and was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale about a mermaid who gives up everything to be united with a young, handsome prince on land. Every morning and evening she swims to the surface from the bottom of the sea and, perched on her rock in the water, she stares longingly towards the shore hoping to catch a glimpse of her beloved prince. Fell in love Carl Jacobsen fell in love with the character after watching a ballet performance based on the fairy tale at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. The brewer was so captivated by both the fairy tale and the ballet that he commissioned the sculptor Edvard Eriksen to create a sculpture of the mermaid. Inspired by a ballerina The sculpture was inspired by ballerina Ellen Price, who in 1909 danced the lead role in the ballet The Little Mermaid at the Royal Theatre. However, Ellen Price would not model in the nude for sculptor Edvard Eriksen. Thus Eriksen’s wife, Eline Eriksen, posed for the sculpture of The Little Mermaid. The headless mermaid The little mermaid has several times been the victim of vandalism. Twice she has lost her head, once the arm was sawn off, and several times she has had paint poured on her. But every time she is rescued and restored, so she can stay in her place by the water and bid travellers welcome to Copenhagen harbour.
