It is a short 5-10 minute walk (up two flights of stairs) across a designated boardwalk where you can see bubbling mud, steam and colourful volcanic rocks. There are two viewing points where you can look out at the scenery, take photos etc. The track itself is only 200 m long. So a good little outing to catch a nearby geothermal highlight.

This local geothermal wonderland is a 28 minute drive away from our property. Orakei Korako, also know as Hidden Valley, sits between Rotorua and Taupo on the Waikato River at Lake Ohakuri. The Silica Terraces that greet you at the base of Orakei Koroako are believed to be the largest of their kind. You will see 23 active natural geysers and a number of boiling hot springs and mud pools as you walk the park. This is an ever changing world inhabited by a variety of native flora and fauna. A highlight of the walk is the Ruatapu Cave or “the sacred hole”. The cave reaches 120 ft. down to a natural and stunningly blue hot pool called Waiwhakaata, which means pool of mirror. This sacred place was used by Maori woman to bath and beautify themselves for ceremonies. One of New Zealand’s top visited volcanic attractions, Lonely Planet Guide has said, “Orakei Korako is possibly the best thermal area left in New Zealand and one of the finest in the world.”
