Sightseeing

Dedicated by President Kennedy in 1963, this is the most beautiful natural area of sea and trails (I think) in the world. See elk, whales, dolphin, seals, coyotes, bobcats, sometimes mountain lions. The Visitors' Center in Olema has displays of animals in the area, geological and cultural history of the area, and a reconstructed and accurate Miwok Indian Village Kule Lokwe. This is a must-see.

Food Scene

The oldest health food store in Marin County. Since their inception, they’ve been in 3 locations, getting progressively bigger. A community center, with great food. A cafe, inside and outside. In addition to groceries, it’s an organic salad bar and a hot prepared food bar – all vegetarian and organic, with some non vegetarian items. More delicious than you might think. Dahl, vegetarian ratatouille and stews. Three different kinds of vegetarian soups; + non vegetarian soups. Prepared food is by the pound ($8.99 per lb) except for brown rice and black beans which are $4.98 per pound -- so don't put everything on one plate. I’ve left a couple of cloth shopping bags in the entry way closet.

It’s funky but has great salads -- my favorite is the Fatoush Salad (persian -- with feta cheese) + Felafel and salad or soup combinations. Mediterranean plate. Mujahadara. Thai chicken salad. The best, least expensive strawberry-banana smoothie. http://www.yelp.com/biz/fair-fix-cafe-fairfax

I like the salad with choice of ahi or salmon, but they also have lots of vegetarian choices. This place uses flavors of Mexico, India, Jamaica, all three of which countries the owners have lived. They will make food to your specs: no oil, no salt, no sugar. https://www.enjoyavatars.com

Not only is this a renovated historic movie palace, but it is an art movie theater, owned by the CFI (California Film Institute), the organization that puts on the annual “Mill Valley Film Festival.” This theater is a TREASURE. Here is a link to the Rafael theater: http://rafaelfilm.cafilm.org The best movies (foreign, indie, documentaries) play at the Rafael, the Fairfax Movie Theater, Regency Movie Theater, Sequoia Movie Theater in Mill Valley. Parks & Nature

THIS IS A MUST-SEE!! The Seashore was made a National Park in 1963 by president Kennedy. http://www.nps.gov/pore/index.htm It’s colder there than it is in Fairfax, (BRING A COAT or sweater/ sweat shirt) so if you get a heat wave while you’re staying here, get in the car and drive to Point Reyes. Highlights:
Point Reyes Ranger Station An informative museum with rangers who will advise and give maps. Exhibits on animals, trails, and the cultures that settled in West Marin. http://www.nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/directions.htm Abbot’s Lagoon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbotts_Lagoon Miwok Village Kule Loklo (near the Ranger Station) full reconstituted Miwok Indian Village. http://www.p
