This whiskey bar convinced me that I like whiskey. Every craft cocktail is delicious, food from the scratch kitchen is tasty, and the ambiance is warm and pleasant. TIP: Ask for the milk punch. Just trust me -- it's amazing!

DC's first rum distillery -- I swear this will change your opinion of rum forever! Cotton & Reed has a cool bar space and is located just across the street from Union Market where you can dine and do some shopping. Tours are Saturday and Sunday afternoons. There is a fee, but it covers a cocktail and rum flight. I recommend trying all of the rums they offer. I also highly recommend their spin on a pina colada!

Sightseeing

World class museums. Moving monuments. Open green space. I'm always happy to play tourist myself and visit the National Mall. Check the museum websites for the current exhibits, and don't be surprised if there is a festival happening. All museums on the Mall are free admission. TIP: On hot summer days, soak your feet in the Sculpture Garden fountain.

The National Gallery's collection is both impressive and accessible (and free). The East building holds the modern art collection, and the West building holds art from the medieval period through 19th century. When you visit the West building, be sure to say hello to Ginevra -- she's the only da Vinci painting in the United States! An underground passage connects the two buildings. It also has a really nice museum store.

Food Scene

Union Market offers a selection of food and shopping like nowhere else in DC. Gourmet food vendors offer everything ranging from local oysters to handmade cheese to gelato to dosa to waffles to BBQ and much, much more! Small shops and pop ups sell home goods and more. Some restaurants offer seating, but it can be at a premium. TIP: Take your time to walk around before you pick where you want to eat. Better yet -- try a few things from different vendors.

DC has an amazing food scene, and Rose's Luxury is among the best. I have to admit, I was upset when I saw Bon Appetit named it the best new restaurant of the year because then everyone knew about our amazing local spot. Everything is delicious, and the service is impeccable. Go with a group and share plates so you can try as much as possible! TIP: Rose's doesn't take reservations, and everyone knows this is one of the country's top restaurants. This means you have to line up early to get a table for the night. Some people even hire "professional" line standers.

You're in for a treat at Indigo! You might see a line stretching out the door. Don't be deterred. The line moves quickly, and the wait allows you to consider the menu written on a chalkboard. They erase items as they sell out for the day. You place your order and pay at a window then find a seat. In nice weather, head to the patio where the neighborhood gathers under strings of lights and morning glories. Enjoy a beer or some wine while you wait for your food. Then settle in and relax for the night - the food comes quickly, but the atmosphere is so nice that you won't want to leave! TIP: Even if you eat meat, the vegetarian options are not to be missed. And, save room for a mango lassi!

Delicious small plates! It's a little hipster, but that's H St for you. The menu is written on chalk on the wall. I have definitely become part of a couple's date while they are trying to eat, and I'm trying to narrow my choices down. :-) Everything I've tried here has been incredibly good, and four plates is more than enough for two people. Handmade, small batch candies made and sold in our nation's capital. If you need a quick (and yummy) gift to take home, consider the chocolate covered Oreos decorated with DC landmarks, stars and stripes, or a donkey or elephant. Parks & Nature

If you need a break from the city, check out Lincoln Park. Surrounded by stunning row houses, the park is full of locals playing with their dogs, watching their children play in the small playgrounds, or relaxing on a bench or blanket. You'll also see two prominent statues in the park: the Emancipation Group featuring Abraham Lincoln holding the Emancipation Proclamation before a kneeling black man who was modeled after Archer Alexander, the last person captured under the Fugitive Slave Act. The second portrays Civil Rights Activist and Educator Mary McLeod Bethune and two young black children.

You'll find acres of trees, shrubs, and plants to give solitude and make you forget you're in the city. The arboretum is free, and pets are welcome on leash. While you're there, check out the amazing bonsai collection. If you're lucky, your trip may even coincide with the annual garden fair, bonsai festival, and orchid show. Look for the columns in the meadow. It's not an ancient temple (or bad scenery left over from your high school prom pictures circa 1998...). The market building holds a variety of vendors, including butchers, seafood, produce, and flowers. The real experience, however, is the farmers market and flea market on the weekends.
