Neighbourhoods

Kemptown, originally "Kemp Town", is a 19th century residential estate in the east of Brighton, designed by Thomas Read, and is a mix of stunning Regency architecture and quaint mews developments and comprises a world renowned school, Brighton College. The one-word name Kemptown now refers to an area larger than the original development and is more correctly King's Cliff. With a wide selection of independent shops, cafes and restaurants and close proximity to the city centre of Brighton, the seafront and also the Marina, Kemptown is perfectly placed for the perfect staycation. Historically known as an actors' and artists' quarter, Kemptown has a sizeable LGBT community and a network of streets with specialised shops, hotels, cafés and pubs. Conversions of grand Regency buildings into flats and bars has provided Kemptown with some distinctive properties; one club is housed within the Sassoon Mausoleum, the former burial chamber of Edward Sassoon. There is an annual carnival and the area is home to the historic Volk’s Electric Railway which runs along the beach. By Brighton Beach is a stunning apartment, part of a purpose-built apartment block constructed in 1826 called Collingwood House. The building sits on the corner of the renowned Marine Square and enjoys a glorious vista over the private gardens and across the famous Brighton beach and the English Channel. Collingwood House was a residence of Robert Cooper Lee Bevan, who founded the Brighton Town Mission (now the Brighton & Hove City Mission) to help those less fortunate than he. After Bevan’s death the building was sold to Philip Sassoon, son of Sir Edward Sassoon and part of the glamorous Sassoon family who had a big impact on Brighton’s social scene. The flamboyant Sassoon family mausoleum is on St. George’s Road, Kemptown and Philip was responsible for selling it off in 1933 and the building is now the Proud Cabaret bar. Collingwood House is Grade II listed and offers incredible views from its upper floors. On a clear day you can see all the way to Selsey!

A group supporting the famous (and extremely long) Madeira Terrace is currently raising funds to restore the ironwork and famous promenade. The whole terrace has taken on a post-apocalyptic feel where the pretty regency style clashes with modern graffiti and concrete.
