Neighborhoods

Capitol Hill neighborhood - center of activity is Pike St and Pine St corridor between Broadway and 12th Ave We are not going to take on listing what you can enjoy in Capitol Hill’s core neighborhood. It is one of Seattle’s beating hearts for culinary, coffee shop, and club culture. And it is 100% urban life. So much so, if you are looking for pastoral views and long grassy knolls, skip it. But if you want to walk the grungy sidewalks where much of Seattle’s music history was made (and is still being made), where some of the best restaurants cut their teeth, go to this neighborhood. It has an amazing and locally famous bookstore, Elliot Bay Books.

The International District (ID) neighborhood – center of activity is Jackson to Weller between 5th and 8th Ave Like Capitol Hill, we won’t take on listing what you can enjoy in Seattle’s International District (ID). It is also one of Seattle’s beating hearts. King Street station is in the ID. There is a myriad of Asian cuisine restaurants and several Asian food grocery stores. Families trek to the ID for weekend meals and everyone young and old comes. For groceries, go to Uwajimaya or Viet-Wah to fill your grocery list of Asian cuisine ingredients. Try one of the neighborhood’s tea purveyors. Buy some amazing tea to take home and steep. Try a roasted Oolong if you aren’t sure what to pick.

Food scene

5 minute walk from the house A very casual beer (and wine and cider) mart with ample seating. Chucks has picnic tables well-spaced under cover and more beer than one can count, both on tap and take away. They do allow dogs so if that is not your thing, maybe skip Chucks. Each evening (and some weekend brunch times too) they host a local food truck where anyone can purchase menu items and eat them at Chuck’s or take away. Usually, the food truck scheduled is noted on Chuck’s website. Kid friendly, in fact, often lots of parents meeting up to socialize with kids in tow. They even have a small ice cream cooler for scoops.

15 minute walk from the house. Quick drive with parking lot available. No outdoor seating. Zagol is a sit down Ethiopian restaurant run by a family. Parking behind the building. It is one of our go-to spots for Ethiopian food but note, the corner of Martin Luther King Blvd. and E. Cherry has at least five different Ethiopian restaurants to try (and a chicken and waffle shop, a Thai food restaurant, a hole in the wall bar and pub called The Twilight Exit – great video games to play!). Pick one and see what you think. Has take away. Kid friendly.

25 minute walk straight north from the house. Quick drive with street parking. Hello Robin is a local bakery 100% dedicated to cookies. It makes the best cookies I have ever had at a bakery. They also serve Molly Moon ice cream, another local favorite (look them up as well). You can order a cookie, a scoop (or pint) or even an ice cream sandwich. If you have a sweet tooth or know someone who does, go here. It is a quick serve spot with no indoor seating but a few benches outside. Take way is how they do it. Very kid friendly.

25-30 minute walk west and north from the house. Quick drive with not-always-easy street parking. Seattle has experienced a Pizza Boom in the last decade. So, find a place you want to try and judge for yourself. There is lots of high end, purest Napolitano-style thin crust pizza (Via Tribunali for example) that we love. But there is also New York style slices and whole pies (Big Mario’s), long time Northwest pizza makers (Pagliacci or Mod Pizza – both very kid friendly and good for order in, take away, or call for delivery, many locations). All close to the house. As for our favorite, Via Tribunal is a bit higher end, sit down joint, very cozy, great full bar. You can order take away. The location we note on Capitol Hill has no outdoor seating but there are a few around Seattle. We also love Central Pizza on Jackson for take away. And we adore Humble Pie on Weller which just has outdoor seating only. Look them up.
