Take a twenty minute walk from there to the North Yorkshire Moors visitor centre and then further along the ridge you can see “The Finest View in England”. The White Horse can be accessed close to the village of Kilburn, where there is a car parking allowing you to walk up to the top. Alternatively, there is paid parking in the North Yorkshire Moors visitor centre (accessed by taking the A170 from Thirsk heading towards Helmsley) and then a twenty minute walk.

Pretty market town on the edge of the Moors. A spectacular drive across the Moors is to take the Helmsley to Osmotherley road, passing through Hawnby and Snilesworth. You can then take the A19 to return to Thornton Le Moor.

An ancient walled city with Roman and Viking heritage that is an excellent day trip. York has day parking and a Park and Ride, or alternatively it is a 20 minute train ride from Northallerton station, with trains every 30 minutes or so.

From Castleton you can take the Moor Road (A171) to the coast or for a more interesting drive, meander through the villages of Lealholm, Danby and Goathland with its railway station, made famous in the Harry Potter movies and pub used in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’.
