Hikes. Views. The start of the Inside Passage that leads to Glacier Bay and Mt. Fairweather, the other end of one giant rockpile on the earth's crust. A cosmic vortex of earth, water, sun, and moon. According to some, Deception Pass is a source of enlightenment, but none who have experienced that ever say anything about it.

North end of Deception Park. The trail to Lighthouse Point is an old standby. It never gets old, always refreshes, whether in sun, rain, wind, or fog. One of the best places I have ever found to walk.

Park at the base of the Mt. Erie road, and read the trail map carefully. It's a bit of a spider's web of trails, and it's a healthy climb to the top, not for the casual walker. But it's a wonderful, broad view of the Sound and the valley and the mountains all around from the top of Sugarloaf. More than worth it...

Sightseeing

On a clear day, you can see all the way to Mt. Rainier from the amazing south-facing viewpoint on top, but only if you can stop looking at the view of the water and islands nearby.

See Anacortes from on high, Cap Sante Marina and Fidalgo Bay and the big oil boats tied to the refineries' docks. And of course, Mt. Baker to the northeast, if the clouds don't hide it.

Food Scene

Good martinis, good bar, good bar food and family fare, and a local favorite place to watch the Seahawks, Sounders, Storm, Mariners, or the US Women's Soccer team among all the sports memorabilia on the walls from the last 75 years or more. Smoking section outside in the back, with radiant heaters, an open air roof for the rain, and even a TV.

The best croissants and turnovers in the whole area, especially almond/chocolate croissant, my favorite. Worth a drive for the Sunday morning lazy breakfast goodies and newspaper. They also have a very nice wine shop, in-house coffee roaster, small grocery store, and a bistro cafe in the back that serves their sandwiches.

A comfortable pizza joint with very good lasagne and calzones, too. The chef used to own and operate Mary Ann's Kitchen, now closed, a few blocks away. Now she serves up the same delicious fare and someone else keeps track of the books and the shopping. Mary Ann has not lost a step. Her food is still delicious and healthy and made by her hand. She has a local following of regulars, a regular fan club.

If you like indie films and theaters, this is for you. Supported by donations and volunteers, this is the real thing: a vibrant art house theater. Two screens, great house, good vibes. They just bought a new building for four more screens, to be opened in 2024. One of the Best Places, in my book. Go. Support them. Enjoy a show!
