Excellent meat grill, 10 min drive from Los Olivos Price: € Menu: Mediterranean Fried octopus, stuffed eggplant, homemade meatballs, baked ham, tuna salad, and rump steak are just a few of the items on Ca’n Pilot’s extensive menu. In this authentic restaurant in San Rafael, which is a huge favourite among locals, you can enjoy a nice lunch or dinner. Ca’n Pilot is specialised in grilled meat and wines. Various dishes are served on a coal grill on your table so that you can taste it just at the right moment. This is definitely recommended for those die-hard meat lovers. Since this traditional restaurant is extremely popular, it is handy to reserve a table in advance. For the kids, there is a play area available. Tel: +34 971 19 82 93

Price: €€€ Menu: Italian / Mediterranean Something different than all known major restaurants with DJ's and crowds. This is the real peaceful Ibiza, which is still reminiscent of the old hippie era. Not that the restaurant is a hippie tent place. It is cosy, combined with delicious food originally from Tuscony, but with several influences. They have a large menu, but a small selection of dishes that are delicious. The restaurant was originally an old finca, which was transformed into a very cosy restaurant. The tables are pleasantly placed in the garden with trees. A must for those who want to escape the crowds for a while, while eating delicious food and relaxing. Tel: +34 971 32 55 43

Destino Price: €€ Menu: Tapas Destino is within walking distance of the white church, dating from 1785, in the centre of Sant Josep. It's a Spanish tapas bar with Moroccan influences. Here, you can savour all sorts of beautiful little dishes on the outside terrace or in one of the cosy spaces inside. There's also couscous on Friday evenings in the summer. Destino has no menu. You can point out dishes in the display, and the staff will happily explain them to you. There are stews with lamb, beef or rabbit, where plums, almonds and the Moroccan spices ras-el-hanout and harissa are ever-present. But also vegetarian dishes such as stuffed aubergine or courgette in soy sauce. If you fancy a dessert, then the staff will come along with a tray of all sorts of pastries and other sweets for you to choose from. We recommend that you book by telephone. Have you plumped yourself down in a nice spot on the terrace? Then don't forget to check out the outside space. Destino gives young artists the opportunity to show and sell their work. After eating, there are plenty of nice shops around the restaurant where you can shop. But the church is also worth a visit! If the large car park diagonally opposite the church is full, then take the first road on the right a little bit after the restaurant. You'll come to a residential area where there's always space to park. Tel: +34 971 80 03 41

Drinks & Nightlife

The iconic Café del Mar, in San Antonio, opened in 1980, and has become synonymous with chill-out music and sun-downers. Famous the world over for its chill-out compilation albums, the cafe has a large terrace, where you can enjoy a cocktail or two, and enjoy the music as the sun sets over the sea. The food is pretty decent too. It may seem like a cliché but it’s something you should experience at least once when in Ibiza.

Sightseeing

This church was built in the 16th century and received later additions that created sculptural, labyrinthine volumes in combination with the white walls, on the hill, sheltered and with an extraordinary porch. The Santa Eulália church or Puig de Missa church is at the crest of a hill 52 metres above sea level, in a small town and with magnificent view of the sea and the area. It is located in the so-called Quartó de Xarc, which already existed during Arab times. It is a fortified religious building from the 16th century that was consecrated in 1568, although there are records of a previous temple at the same point. It became a parish in 1785 on the orders of the first bishop of Ibiza. Like many other examples of religious architecture, its current appearance is the result of different additions and refurbishments. The nave is believed to be the one from the original building, and other chapels, the ‘porxo’ (or porch) and other structures (such as the vicar’s house or ‘cas vicari’, the priest’s house or ‘cas capellà’ and the sacristy) were added in the late 17th century and early 18th century. The inside is austere. The chapels are dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Saint Anthony the Abbot, physician Saints Cosmas and Damian, Saint Anthony of Padua, the Nursing Madonna and the Holy Trinity. The main altarpiece is Baroque (1674-78) by sculptor José Ferreres, and it was brought from San Millán (Segovia) during the 20th century through an initiative of the Marquis of Lozoya, who had a house in the puig. However, the central image representing Saint Eulalia is modern (1940), while the cloth of the attic is from the 18th century. The Stations of the Cross are represented in Valencian tiles along the nave. The most important image is the one of Christ tied to the column, from the 17th century. The outside is peculiar: it is white and undecorated and still looks defensive or fortified. There is also a small garden. The access gate, which is off-centre from the church centreline, is large because it was used as the meeting point for the community that lived scattered in the fields. It has two rows of columns with arches, an access to the cemetery and a simple hollow. It is catalogued as a Bien de Interés Cultural, together with its environment and the Puig de Missa hill.

Dalt Vila (meaning upper town), is Ibiza’s old town and is on a hill, contained within ancient walls, and looking out to sea. The views from the ramparts are stunning, and the numerous winding, cobbled streets and steps lead towards the cathedral at the top. The main gateway into the old town is up a ramp and through an old draw-bridge. The area is not simply a tourist attraction but is still partly residential, and offers tantalising glimpses of real life through the occasional open door. A fascinating area to wander around during the day or evening, with many little shops, galleries, museums, and restaurants in the narrow streets.

Puig des Molins translates as hill of windmills. Located just outside the old town, and on the original 7th century BC Phoenician settlement site, the area also contains a large, ancient, and well-preserved necropolis, with an estimated 3000 tombs (although only a handful of these are open to the public). The hillside is like a rabbit warren of tombs, most of which remain un-excavated, and you can follow a set route around the hypogea (burial chambers) and even descend into one. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there is also an archeological museum on site, detailing the necropolis’s history century by century. Entry to the museum is very cheap and it makes for a fascinating visit.

Es Vedrà is a rocky and uninhabited island, standing 413m high, just off the south-west of Ibiza. A mythical place, folk-lore says not only that it is the third most magnetic place on earth, but that it is the birthplace of Phoenician goddess Tanit, and that it was home to the sirens and sea nymphs who tried to lure Ulysses from his ship in Homer’s Odyssey. The island is also the setting for the local fable Es Gegant des Vedrà (the giant of Es Vedra) about two brothers who go to the island to search for a cure for their father’s illness and come face to face with a giant. Mythology aside, Es Vedrà is a stunning place to take some pictures or watch the sun go down.

Originally used by smugglers to stash their illegal wares, the C’an Marça Caves, in the north of the island, can be quite chilly inside and make a welcome break from the intense heat of summer. Filled with stalagmites and stalactites, you can take an official tour of the caves, and learn all about their history. The tour includes a light show around an artificial waterfall, created to represent how the caves once looked.

Las Dalias hippy market Stroll through the stands and grapevines at one of the most beautiful hippie markets of Ibiza: Las Dalias. The market was started in 1954 by Juanito, who came up with the idea to mimic the hippie markets of Es Canar. And a good idea, it was, because this hippie market currently sees some 20,000 visitors a day during peak season. The market, located in San Carles, has over 200 stands and additionally acts as a concert venue and site location for other events. It is the most important meeting venue for this section of the island. In addition to authentic products, Las Dalias also offers many bulk products. The selection of products is huge: jewellery items, exotic music instruments, colourful handbags, artwork, tapestry, hammocks, figurines... you'll find it all here at this historic hippie market. There's a great chance you'll find something to suit your tastes. At the centre of the grounds, there is a pub where you can take a break from strolling around and grab a refreshing drink to cool off as well as a bite to eat. It is highly recommended to spend (part of) the day tickling your fancy at Las Dalias and get a glimpse of the cosy atmosphere and check out the nice little stands. The market is open every Saturday from 10am to 8pm between May 1st and October 31st. On Monday evening, there is a night market from 7pm till 1 in the morning. We advise that you hit up Las Dalias early in the morning on Saturday or sometime in the early evening since it can get rather crowded during the afternoons. Entry is free, and there are three areas where you can park (paid and unpaid). Just as well, the market can be easily reached by bus.

Punta Arabi - Es Canar Relive the 60s and 70s at the largest hippie markets of Ibiza: Punta Arabi! This market is held every Wednesday from 10am to 7pm in Es Canar during peak season. This is also the first hippie market of the island and was started in 1973 by Ibizan artists and hippies. On average, 13,000 people travel each week to this colourful market from all ends of the island. Given the 400-500 stands that you'll find there, you won't find yourself running out of things to see. Get down with the live music, living statues and warm snacks. You'll feel like a kid in a candy store among all the beautiful jewellery items, artwork, handmade leather crafts and colourful clothing. Apart from the genuinely authentic Ibizan products, there are also many "Made in..." products available. Not to mention, it isn't the most beautiful hippie market of the island, and there is slightly less ambiance than the Las Dalias hippie markets, but it is certainly a recommended place to check out sometime. The market is can be easily reached by bus, and entry is free. Paid parking is available as well.

Beaches

Our Favorite beaches in Ibiza
Beach type: Sun worshipers, and cliff divers. Location: Above San Antonio Punta Galera is not particularly deserving of the title “beach”; rather, it is a mecca for hard-core sunbathers and daredevils who like showing off some cojones in diving off of the steep cliffs. Since there is no shade in sight, rapid sunburn is inevitable, so bring along lots of water and sunblock. There are no other amenities at Punta Galera, although you do get to enjoy a marvelous view of the turquoise sea in addition to enjoying all the sunbathing and cliff-diving adventures in peace and quiet. Punta Galera is close to the popular beach of Cala Salada. Tip: There are plenty of flat rocks upon which you can lay to catch a few rays; and if it ever gets too hot, all you have to do is take a dip in the clear blue sea!

The first stretch of Es Cavallet, near the parking area, is popular among celebrities who often dine in one of the two (pricey) restaurants La Escollera and El Chiringuito. All the way at the end of the beach, there is an active gay scene. Es Cavallet is around the corner of the famous Las Salinas Beach.

Beach type: Something for everyone / party Location: Ibiza Town This is the longest beach on Ibiza island! Playa d'en Bossa is littered with all sorts of bars and restaurants, varying from hip to trite. The clear water and fine sand provide an ideal and safe environment for kids to play beach games. Here, you are also exposed to lovely views overlooking the old part of Ibiza Town. If there are southwardly winds, then this beach is enormously popular among windsurfers. At the end of the beach (on the other side of Ibiza Town), it is somewhat calmer and quieter, as there are fewer people in the area and a lot less house music, to boot! If you are looking to party-hardy during the day, however, then the Bora Bora bar (trite as it is) is definitely the place to be. This is situated approximately halfway down the beach. At the end of the beach, we also recommend Club Nassau, a fantastic beach club with good cocktails, lounge beds, and music. Facilities: Lounge beds, umbrellas, showers, lifeguards, accesible for the disabled, many restaurants and bars. Activities: Paddle boats, windsurfing school, catamaran rental, kite surfing, diving, beach volleyball courts.

Beach type: Popular Location: South West Cala d’Hort is a small beach with a fantastic view overlooking Es Vedra island, which is merely a few hundred meters off the coast. The beach itself is sprawled with sand on one side and scattered with rock on the other. In the summer especially, this is one very popular beach. The beach is shouldered by humongous cliffs and is home to two small restaurants and a boutique. At the top, you can see Es Boldado restaurant. Parking nearby can be troublesome. A trail of cars is alongside the road, and once the hilltop is reached, you will be lucky to find any place to park. The hidden beach Atlantis is also located near Cala d'Hort and definitely worth a visit. Location: 10 minutes from San Jose or from Cala Vadella Facilities: Lounge beds, umbrellas, restaurants, beach boutiques, lifeguards, accessible for the disabled. Activities: Relax! Size: 150 meters long and about 15/25 meters wide

Beach type: Popular Location: South West Cala Conta offers a marvelous view overlooking the spattered islands off of the coastline. Combined with the turquoise hue of prismic waters, Cala Conta constitutes one of the most stunning beaches of the entire island. There are actually two stretches of beach in Cala Conta: one with a rockier coastline; and the other, near dunes. There is little shade to seek, so it will be handy to arrange for a parasol. The water is incredibly shallow, which makes it particularly safe for children. For the more experienced swimmer, however, it is nice to swim out to one of the islands, starting from the coast. In the summer, it is all the more amazing to be able to witness the sunset from one of the restaurant terraces here. Especially Sunset Ashram is a beautiful spot. The prices here are rather reasonable, by the way, for the quality of the food you receive! So, you can really enjoy yourself. This is an enormously popular beach. During peak season, it is a good idea to get out early before all the good spots are taken. Other popular beaches nearby are Cala Bassa and Cala Tarida.

Beach type: Family / nudist beach Location: North-east Aguas Blancas is a beautifully outstretched, sandy beach monickered for its foaming, white waves (which are perfect for body-boarding, by the way) and is one of the two, official nudist beaches. Do not fret, however, if this is not your cup of tea, as the nudists are mostly concentrated in the outskirts of the beach. Nonetheless, this is also precisely the spot with the cool Mojito bar and where you can catch the best rays, so it is actually pretty cool to hang out on this side. The ambiance is great amidst the many locals, and there is a little something for everyone. Hands down, our favorite beach on the island! Beach type: Hippy / family Location: North Benirras is a nice, medium-sized beach in northern Ibiza, surrounded by mountainous cliffs toupeed with pine trees. The beach is a mixture of sand and pebble with a few round boulders bathing as permanent fixtures in its shallow waters. The water is clear as glass. It recedes slowly with the tide. And it is all the more ideal for swimming and snorkeling. In the afternoon, it is also a popular spot for boats to achor. Just as well, it is a spectacular place for watching the sunset. Sunday evening, there is a notorious hippie beachfest, which is worth visiting in its own right. There are two restaurants known for their delectably fresh fish dishes. We prefer Elements. Additionally, there is another, small snack bar and cool beach club. Makes for an ideal day retreat for the family! Location: 10 minutes from San Miguel Facilities: Lounge beds, umbrellas, showers, restaurants and a bar, beach shop, lifeguards Activities: Pedal boat and canoe Size: Length 160 meters long and 40 meters wide

Beach type: Trendy Location: South Salinas beach forms the southernmost part of the island. It is named after the salty seas in south Ibiza. It is a popular hangout for celebrities and is a real favorite for soccer players. The water is clear as glass and it is exhilarating to get out and walk for a bit, given the Ibiza Wildlife Conservation Area borders next to it. Salinas is also enormously popular for people into the clubbing scene. There are always well-known DJs spinning at beach clubs like the Jockey Club, or Sa Trinxa, while your cocktail gets brought out to you at your lounge bed. It is sure to give that ideal summer feeling! On the outer right extreme of the beach, there is a sailing school where you can rent a catamaran or take kite-surfing lessons. A friendly young English-Ibizan fellow operates these. To conclude, take heed: as was the case with Es Cavallet, it can get jammed packed with crowds here during peak season, including a more frequent line-up of venders and merchants who want nothing more than to pitch a sale to make a quick buck! Las Salinas is also the spot where a lot of rental boats are docked.
