Charming wing of Grade 2* country house, log-burner, 2 double bedrooms, both en-suite, in 8 acre garden & Stour Valley. Stunning countryside. Romantic, charming, blissfully comfortable, cosy & warm. Ideal families, couples or friends. Heaven! The perfect place for a special weekend or a family holiday with swimming pool, tennis, goalposts, table tennis by arrangement, trampoline, playhouse (all at your own risk!) Please see important dates relating to the property for 2020 under The Space
2 en suite bedrooms, COTTAGE wing of Grade 2 country house in 8 acres of garden & Stour Valley. Stunning views, countryside & birdlife. Romantic, charming, blissfully comfortable, cosy & warm. Tennis court and swimming pool BY ARRANGEMENT when available.. Heaven! Please read on to see current news and updates. We acknowledge the seasons: At CHRISTMAS (from mid-Dec) - it will feel festive and special with a decorated tree - the perfect place to wake up to a stocking! We also mark EASTER and Valentine's Day and the fresh flowers in the cottage reflect the season. 2020 GARDEN OPENINGS FOR THE PUBLIC when we serve soups and teas and will ask you to move your car: Saturday 22nd February, 1-4pm. SNOWDROPS AND WINTER PLANTS AND SHRUBS Sunday 7th June - 11am - 4pm. Sunday September 13th - 11m - 4pm We continue to develop a Jungle Walk round the Lower Lake - this is at its most "jungley" in May but is lovely throughout the year and improving all the time. Spring blossom (including an avenue of ornamental pear) bluebells with cow parsley running through small woodland areas, and stunning barks with vast and ancient Acacia, leaning Oak and London Planes. A charming enclosed swimming pool garden and long-established bay and yew. A Royal Bed, and a Cottage Garden. Large Victorian glasshouse in walled garden, many scented plants and established climbers throughout the garden, including 30 or so varieties of roses, plus clematis, wisteria and hydrangea, a young Magnolia walk, many varieties of Acer and Eucalyptus. There is also a Bee Garden - a bank of wild flowers which peak with many other autumn stars for our September (Sunday 7th September) Charity opening, when exotic plants and Dahlias supplement the plants which shone in June. Chisholm's was originally the housekeeper's cottage for our family house, and is romantically cosy rather than spacious. It has been completely renovated with 2 bedrooms, one double with an excellent en-suite shower, and the other with 2 single beds with an en-suite bath and a shower over. It has a kitchen/sitting room with a round dining table, log-burner and television and wifi. There is an desk in the hall which is ideal for a laptop, or to write or even revise! Chisholm's is the perfect place for a romantic, private weekend away, just an hour's train journey from Liverpool Street, or for 2 couples or a family to spend some very special time in comfort and an enviable country house location which would be difficult to match. We provide board and card games, books, and with a bit of notice, a high chair. HOWEVER, please don’t be surprised or disappointed if you let me know 24 hours beforehand that you want extras and I can’t provide them - this is a family-run Airbnb, not a world class hotel! As well as Chisholm's, you will be very welcome to enjoy our beautiful 8 acre garden, and BY ARRANGEMENT (and possibly a small fee depending on the our family arrangements) the pool will be available at certain times. There is also a tennis court which you are welcome to enjoy by arrangement, and a well-equipped beach hut is available to rent at Frinton beach (35 mins drive) by arrangement. The garden has several seating areas, including a table and chairs immediately outside Chisholm's Wisteria-covered walls for you to sit and read the paper with a cup of coffee and listen to the church bell chime on the hour, and the endless birdsong. We would simply ask that you respect our family privacy as we will yours - there is masses of room for us all! Please do note though, it is a 4 person cottage. 5, even if one of you is a few weeks old, IS A SQUASH! You've been warned - and I won’t be accepting 5 guests in future. With advance notice, we are delighted to light the log-burner, and we will supply a welcome pack of tea, coffee, milk, eggs and bread. Please note though that it is a welcome supply to enable you to have tea and toast or gin and tonic on arrival, not a fully-equipped larder, so if you are wanting things like baking powder, olive oil and a kilo of coffee, please bring them! A full manual is in the cottage. Local interest includes towns (Colchester, Sudbury, Bury St Edmunds) museums (The Munnings Museum at Dedham, The National Horseracing Museum in Newmarket) beaches (Frinton, Aldborough) pubs and restaurants. There are also excellent gardens to visit, including the Beth Chatto Garden, Hyde Hall and East Bergholt Place, and fabulous walking and cycling through the Constable country of the Stour Valley. Chisholm's is 5 miles from Colchester, and is only 50 minutes to an hour by train from London. However, there is no village shop and I can’t recommend the pub - there are excellent pubs and shops within 4 miles or so, but a car is advisable. We will try to accept all bookings we are comfortable with, but one night bookings can be very difficult for us and so we ask that you agree to a £15 surcharge for a one night visit. Thank you. We have horses - they live in an immaculate yard and are extremely well-mannered. However, like any live animal, they can be unpredictable if spooked or frightened so please don't do anything to give them a fright, and be certain to close any gates you go through. Please keep any visiting dogs on leads when you close to the house or anywhere near the yard. Our garden is open to the public and groups on certain dates - please be sure you are happy with these.
The church bells chime on the hour, every hour between 8am and 8pm, and are rung for Sunday services. 2 traditional working farms in the village and a children's playground.

Obrigado!

    Marcel2017-04-16T00:00:00Z

Relax in this detached former cart lodge surrounded by beautiful countryside and located in the owners’ grounds in a great rural location. The Cart Lodge can accommodate up to 5 people, with the Master Bedroom having a King size bed and the second bedroom having a Queen size bed and single bed. We take the utmost care in cleaning the property including disinfecting frequently touched surfaces between reservations so that it is safe for our guests upon arrival.
The Cart Lodge is located in a village celebrating 800 years, with the village comprising a village pub (The Five Bells, located a short walk away), a church, primary school and village shop. The next nearest and biggest town is Halstead, about 3 miles away. Sudbury, located in Suffolk, is just a little further afield, about 8 miles. Colchester, Britain's oldest recorded town, is about 20 minutes drive away.
The peace and tranquility of the area makes this an ideal getaway, and yet within easy reach of local villages and towns. There is an abundance of local pubs and eateries to enjoy, if cooking in the self-contained Cart Lodge does not suit.

Kick off your shoes, feel at home and discover the power of peace at Campion Lodge. Here, only the birds and your bubbling hot tub disturb the silence … Campion Lodge is a luxury 5 AA star self-catering lodge near Wakes Colne, a village in the breath-taking Colne Valley on the Essex and Suffolk border. But the real playground is the 500 acres of private grounds with woodlands and two acre fishing lake stocked with carp and rudd. A haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers, you may even catch a glimpse of a kingfisher. Your furry friends will love it too – the woods with its little stream are pooch perfect for sniffing and moseying about in. Set at the end of a mile long private driveway, our bolthole for a cosy couple is tucked away in an ancient meadow in undulating countryside, where in decades gone by heavy horses, cattle and sheep would have grazed.

The state of the art lodge boasts the very best of open plan living. Cook up a storm in the fully equipped kitchen, watch Netfiix on the bespoke sofas and enjoy the latest technology. With a private entrance, the annex has a super-comfy bed, sofa, smart TV, en-bathroom with a 6-foot bath & separate power-shower, kitchen, parking & walks from the door. Breakfast goodies are provided & the ace community pub is a mile away. Many of our guests return each year to our friendly abode, so come, relax & enjoy the splendid Essex landscape of Constable & the Dedham Vale, nearby Suffolk wool towns, like Lavenham, or Colchester Castle & zoo. Or stay put, & enjoy the big skies!
Refurbished in January 2020, this is a bright, spacious flat, with a magnificent Georgian mahogany half-tester king size bed. The annex boasts a spacious bathroom, and a fully equipped kitchen with everything you need including an oven, microwave, electric hobs, and work-space for meal preparation. There’s a fridge, with milk, eggs, and butter, which are provided for you on your arrival to help make your stay easy, and enjoyable.   The annex, or apartment has: - Smart TV which swivels on the wall so you can view it from both the bed, and the sofa. - A separate, walk-in power-shower - A large six-foot bath - Sofa, desk, chest of drawers, cupboard and hanging space - You have use of the adjoining garden (rugs are available), and if you’re feeling energetic, try a bounce on the trampoline, entirely at your own risk! - We have a swimming pond, or a natural pool. If you’re brave enough to want a dip - it isn’t heated - let us know,  The kitchen comes with coffee and a selection of teas and your breakfast items are, typically; granola, Weetabix, bread, butter, jam, and eggs etc. If you have food allergies or dietary limitations of any kind, please let us know in advance. Other things: On-demand shows and movies Secured Wifi Private garden area Hair dryer Linens and towels are included Dishes, pots, pans, + oil, spices, etc are in the cupboards. In fact, all you really need do is turn up. An all-weather jumbo bean bag lives under the bed and rugs for picnics live in the hanging cupboard. The Annex comfortably sleeps 2. If your party is larger (i.e. a 3rd person, or a child), the sofa is a sofa-bed and will comfortably accommodate one adult or 2 small children. We have a travel cot available-if you need it. Please contact us in advance to discuss arrangements. We can also leave a twin air mattress and extra linen in the cupboard prior to your arrival. A few more things... 1. We live in the main house full-time and have two ridiculously friendly dogs and a cat. Though we don’t allow pets in the guest wing, if you suffer from pet allergies you should know that our animals potter about the place. (Most of our guests adore them!) Be aware though, allergens might lurk, for those unfortunate enough to suffer from such things. 2. Approximately once a week during the warmer months the lawn needs a trim. It’s a big lawn and we try to keep the noise to a minimum. Mostly, the garden work is reasonably quiet (raking, trimming, etc.) but sometimes it’s a little noisy (leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, fence repair, and such stuff). Most guests don’t even bat an eye, but someone mentioned it and we thought going forward, our Airbnb guests should know what to expect. 3. We’re in the heart of the big-skied, glorious North Essex countryside. Even though we’re only an hour from London you’ll probably run across tractors and pot-holes in the roads. Also, birds, the occasional badger and very often deer deviate into the lanes. Drive with caution! Knowing how to reverse is a useful skill. If you get lost, it’s best to ask for directions or call us - you’ll be amazed at our rural position. Don’t panic - we’ll work out where you are to get you back. Sat-nav brings you to our gate. Our neighbours are lovely and you may meet a few at the community pub the village saved - The Lamarsh Lion - which is a mile down the road. It boasts fine ales and decent pub grub. Booking at weekends here is advisable. And please stick to local footpaths when walking. Nettles sting, brambles rake; so wear suitable shoes and clothing on country rambles.
Location information: Situated on the Essex / Suffolk border, Holdens Barn is perfectly positioned for trips in and around Constable country - named after the world-renown artist John Constable. Enjoy the subtle gently valleys of the Dedham Vale, with the pretty timbered 'chocolate box,' villages of Stoke by Nayland, Kersey, Boxford, Dedham and Hadleigh. If you like the rustic charm of medieval, wonky oak-framed buildings, the famous Suffolk wool towns of Lavenham, Long Melford, (which are less than half an hour away) Clare and Cavendish are unmissable. This is Gainsborough Country (after the artist, Thomas Gainsborough). Historic, Roman-walled Colchester is a short drive (20-30 mins) and we're forty minutes from the seaside at Frinton with its sandy beach and charming Victorian town. Colchester has a large Norman castle (built on top of the remains of the Temple of Claudius, razed by Boudicca in AD61) with a recently refurbished museum. Castle Park next to the, eh, castle, is lovely, and has events on throughout the year. 'First Site' is a modern gallery worth checking out not least for its contemporary curved architecture, and of course Colchester Zoo is world-famous. It really is excellent! Heading inland, Bury St Edmunds (with famous abbey), is forty minutes away and Chelmsford is about the same distance south, towards London. Central London is about one hour and a half by car. Cambridge one hour. Ipswich and Saffron Walden about forty-five minutes. Local Shopping: Sudbury, our local town and celebrated as the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough, has a pile of supermarkets, (Waitrose, Aldi, Sainsbury, Tesco etc.) restaurants for all tastes - and wallets - banks, boots, hairdressers, as well as an excellent market in the main square on Thursdays and Saturday mornings. Excellent butcher here as well as groceries. Halstead, (fifteen-mins), has a range of shops on its steep high street. Bures, just down the road has a deli and a small confectionery/paper shop. There's a cracking farmers market on the second Saturday of every month. Local Sights: From our door, many walks trace through the acclaimed Dedham Vale, Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) countryside. A keen eye will spot deer, badgers, hares, and a variety of birdlife too. In May, we often have nightingales singing nearby. Following the network of footpaths you can explore the pleasant, gently undulating valley of the river Stour. One couple made Nayland and back! in a few hours. The ancient Norman churches are well worth exploring (Lamarsh is c.1100) and are generally free to enter. If you're a keen cyclist, biking is a great way to explore the windy roads and the surprising nooks and crannies dotted about our ancient landscape. (A pile of information sits within the desk in the main room - including ordinance survey maps). Train: If you're car-less we can collect you from Bures train station which is only a mile or so away. (About 15-20 mins walk). The train is on the Sudbury line (aka - The Gainsborough Line) and connects to mainline trains at Marks Tey. From here you can reach London Liverpool Street about an hour in one direction, and Sudbury, which is a brisk seven minutes through the valley in the other. In our experience, you really are much better off with a car. There's a wonderful railway museum at Chapel - the next stop from Bures towards Marks Tey. Pubs and Restaurants: The Lamarsh Lion, nicknamed 'The Painter's Pub' is about a mile away. The pub re-opened in May 2018 after it was bought by the local community. It is a classic country pub with fine ales and excellent value pub-grub. It's a friendly dog-friendly establishment with dining area, pool table and lovely outside views. Please, come and support it! Why the Painter's Pub? Gainsborough, along with John Constable, painted in the village (Constable's grandfather was the miller in Bures) and, since the pub has been in operation for over 700 years, it is likely that these two would have enjoyed refreshments here. Further away, right on the river is the Henny Swan, and the Eight Bells down in Bures and the Thatchers arms in Mount Bures. Also worth noting another local community pub is the excellent Kings Head in Pebmarsh. A wide range of dining options are available in the local villages from Indian (Little India in Maplestead - 10 mins - is the pick of the bunch but also, Riverside Spice - Earls Colne (10 mins) and Ballingdon Valley - Ballingdon (Sudbury), to Chinese, Thai and fast-food (McDonalds, KFC) also in Sudbury. We're more than happy to point them out - just come and ask.

The Grade II Vicarage Cottage is sited in the middle of the historic village of Great Tey. It was originally thought to be stables to the Great House, which was the name given to The Old Vicarage when it was built in the early part of the 19th century. The Cottage was originally converted to a house before the war and has been updated several times over the years.
Vicarage Cottage stands right beside my home, The Old Vicarage, but is completely self contained. It is cosy and full of character, perfect for a relaxing break. The spacious bedroom also has a double sofa bed. There is a living room, kitchen, bathroom and access to the large garden, which is available at all times, but in the summer watch out for ‘Herbert’ the robotic lawnmower. The living room has Freeview TV with music equipment (radio + cd player) and books galore.
It is within walking distance of the local pub, The Chequers, and a few minutes driving distance from the highly recommended The Barn restaurant. The Chequers and the Barn do not cook meals at the beginning of the week, but the Swan Pub at Chapppel, the next Village, is open every day. Colchester, Britain oldest recorded town, is 6 miles away for anyone interested in history. Suffolk, famous for Constable Country is a little further. There are many designated footpath walks around the village for the ramblers. A real peace and quiet getaway.
