Bigbury-on-Sea is about 15 minutes drive and offers a couple of beaches for either paddling, surfing or just swimming depending on swell & weather. Discovery Surf will hire out surf boards and paddle boards as well as offer lessons for all abilities. Burgh Island is prominent from both beaches and is a great place to walk to the top of the hill for far reaching views from the Pilchard Hut. The interesting, Art Deco Burgh Island Hotel overlooks the beaches. It is not open to visitors unless you book in for a meal or cream tea, but is worth a look- taking you back to the classic 1930’s. Food & drinks are available from one of Englands oldest pubs; The Pilchard Inn. Both the pub & hotel are a short stroll across the sands, and don’t worry if you get caught out by the tide- the sea tractor will bring you safely back! Paid parking & wc’s also available.

South Milton Sands is a year-round dog friendly beach. It has a beautiful aspect centred around the prominent Thurlestone Rock. In the summer months paddleboards and kayaks are available for hire to explore the rock more closely at high tide. Excellent food can be purchased from the Beach House with inside and outside seating- but book ahead of you want to sit inside as it is very popular. Fantastic fresh seafood is there speciality, but other options also available. Parking is offered free for National Trust members, or paid for otherwise.
