No visit to Batu Pahat is complete without posing for a photo at its main landmark. Penggaram Square (also known as Dataran Penggaram) features a monument with a fountain depicting the famous chiselled rock that gave Batu Pahat its name. It is considered the main symbol of the town and is also a favourite spot for locals who like to come here for jogging and flying kites, especially in the morning and evening. Penggaram Square is also the main venue for various celebration like Chinese New Year, National Day and Hari Raya.

Legend has it that the Siamese soldiers were chiselling rocks at Minyak Beku village to collect drinking water after being defeated by the Malacca troops in the 15th century. That gave this land its name, Batu Pahat. During the town’s centennial celebration, a monument with a fountain depicting the chiselled rock was built in Dataran Penggaram. This is the town square where annual events such as National Day, Hari Raya and Chinese New Year celebrations are held. During normal days, families visit the Dataran to have an evening walk or to fly kites. There are stalls around that sells food, drinks and toys for kids.
