30 min drive to learn about and see the remnants of Maine’s first defense against enemy intruders during the 19th century. Visit Fort McClary (fee of $1-3 to be left in dropbox) to see a beautifully restored hexagonal blockhouse. Next to it are a magazine and a brick rifleman’s house. Granite blocks from abandoned construction are scattered along the seashore.

there are a few old forts in the area, cool to check out and get a historic perspective on the coastal network of forts and lighthouses.
