Wild. Rugged. Beautiful. The Crown Mines are perched on the very edge of the cliff, they must have been horrendous to work in - the old boys in the town talk of how you could hear the rocks moving on the sea bed when they were in the shafts that went under the sea. And spare a moment to consider how they were built. For now though they make an iconic local photo opportunity as well as staring in many films. They're a few minutes walk from The Queens pub in Botallack.

Mining heritage. Positioned on the cliffs above the sea. Quite a walk to get to on a good day. Difficult to imagine what it must have been like to have to go inside and under the ground for long shifts not knowing what was happening outside. The series Poldark has used Botallack for its mining scenes. There is a very interesting Museum nearby called Geevor. Geevor was one of the last mines to close down. Again beautiful scenery and walks in either direction on the coastal footpath. Cape Cornwall in one direction and Pendeen lighthouse in the other with lots of interest inbetween.

Crown Mines/Botallack (2 miles from Pendeen) - On the wild Tin Coast, the famed Crowns engine houses cling to the foot of the cliffs in a landscape transformed by its industrial past. Part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, and the filming location for Wheal Leisure in BBC's Poldark, from here Cornish miners changed the world. Countryside open dawn to dusk, Count House Workshop Café generally open 10am– 5pm. Parking: just beyond Botallack Count House
